On Sunday, May 20, 2018 the 24th annual Unifest multi-cultural festival will pay homage to Joseph Hill the late reggae icon. Joseph Hill was the lead singer and songwriter for the roots reggae group Culture, most famous for their 1977 hit “See Dem a Come” on their debut album “Two Sevens Clash“, but also well known for their “International Herb” single. The event which is held at Vincent Torres Park in Lauderdale Lakes will run at its new time 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
UNIFEST, the oldest Caribbean multicultural festival in Broward County is a presentation of the Greater Caribbean American Cultural Coalition (GCACC) a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in partnership with the Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lauderdale Lakes. This year the event will mark 24 years and have scheduled many family oriented activities spanning over 3 days from Friday May 18th climaxing with the main event on Sunday May 20th.
“Unifest is designed with the family in mind and provides great cultural and educational experience for the young and young at heart, the added days of events provides the flexibility for the community to be engaged in one or more of the planned activities,” said founding member and Mayor of Lauderdale Lakes, Hazelle Rogers.
The festival features cultural exposition with a carnival taste, Caribbean Consulate village, battle of the marching bands, domino competition, kid’s zone, kid’s heritage competition, scholarship essay competition, sponsored by the Florida Lottery, business and health exposition, authentic Caribbean food court, arts & crafts and ‘concert under the stars’. This year’s performances will feature Super Reggae Group Culture, with lead singer Kenyatta Hill son of the late founder Joseph Hill; Agent Sasco aka Assassin; Soca sensation Leon Caldero & Roger George backed by the Code 868 band, Hezron, Terry Lyons and many more.
