The 3rd Annual Celebration, Cultural Tribute & Scholarship Fundraiser, honoring the life and legacy of the late Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley, O.M, O.J., will be held on Saturday, September 6th, beginning at 5:00 p.m., at the Sierra Norwood Calvary Baptist Church – 495 NW 191 St, Miami Gardens.
Under the patronage of the Consul General of Jamaica, the event will again, observe “Miss Lou’s” birthday through song , dance and drama, in commemoration of her work.
The proceeds of this event will fund the “Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley Scholarship”, currently tenable at the “Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts” in Kingston Jamaica.
Scholarships are rotated through the Schools of the Performing Arts – Music, Dance & Theatre,
with last year’s scholarship, going to the School of Music.
This year, according to Mrs. Norma Darby, Director of the S. Florida -. based, Folklore Group – the Jamaican Folk Revue, the concert celebrating Miss Lou, will be held on Saturday, at 5:00 p.m., making it more available to the youth “pickney dem”, who were at the center of Miss Lou’s
life and career. Children under 6 years, will be admitted Free of cost, while children 6-12years old, the cost is only $5.00. Adults tickets are $10.00 (if accompanied by a child) and the time will be from 5:00 p.m. to the last “Ring Ding”, ensuring everyone a “Boonoonoonoos” time.
The evening will be a “Bellyful of culture”, with a variety of S. Florida artistes, including dub poet Malachi Smith, Jeanne Powell, Rev. Easton Lee, the Jamaican Folk Revue, the children of the Sierra Norwood Calvary Baptist church “Ring-Ding” group, Tallawah Mento Band ,Sophia Nicholson and Vhris Gilchrist, and others.
Refreshments will be on Sale and Books, C.D’s etc., by Miss Lou and some of our local writers, will be also available. Tickets are available from members of the Ja. Folk Revue and in South-west Dade, from Jamaica Groceries & Spices – 9587 SW 160 Street (Colonial Drive)
