Merl Grove High School Past Students’ Association NY 3rd Annual Women’s History Month Caribbean Celebration

The Merl Grove High School Past Students’ Association (MGHS PSA) NY Chapter Inc. will honor Women’s History Month by returning to the New York Caribbean cultural scene with the presentation of “MOTHER-IN-LAW” written and directed by B. Nandi Jacob.

After six-year hiatus the MGHS PSA NY Chapter is proud to present this belly-aching comedy with nuggets of hard human truth about family expectations, living on one own terms, and the immigrant angst. Set in Brooklyn, it is two days before the wedding of Petra and Philo, young first-generation immigrants from the Caribbean. They are set to unite their goals in marriage despite the wear-and-tear on their five-year relationship: Philo’s insistence on singing and passing the hat on the #4 train as he fixates on “Big Apple” stardom, and Petra’s frustration over her diminishing dreams, and undocumented status. Along comes his mother from the Caribbean for the wedding with Battica, a strange friend in tow, and scheming on her mind. As Philo weakens from his mother’s onslaught, Petra’s world wise neighbor, the Jamaican Marva, jumps into the fray to save the day (or make it worse).  Sharon Wilson, the president of the MGHS PSA NY Chapter said, “This production of MOTHER-IN-LAW is the perfect play to relaunch our Women’s History Month Caribbean Celebration as well as introduce the Chapter’s Dinner Theatre fundraiser. We hope to make this event an annual presentation featuring Caribbean playwrights, directors and actors.”
