AMBASSADOR Dr. GORDON SHIRLEY TO SPEAK AT JAMPACT MEETING ON

DEC. 4TH AT COLUMBIA BUSINESS SCHOOL

NON PROFIT GROUP TO USE EVENT TO LAUNCH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREAT AND TOY DRIVE SUPPORTING FIVE BASIC SCHOOLS IN JAMAICA

New York, NY. — His Excellency Dr. Gordon Shirley, Jamaica’s eighth Ambassador to the United States will speak at Jamaica Impact’s (JAMPACT) December 4th meeting as part of the organization’s ongoing ‘Engaging the Diaspora’ series. The meeting, scheduled to start at 2 PM, will be held at Columbia Business School -Room 303 Uris Hall. In his remarks, Dr. Shirley will discuss ongoing initiatives involving Jamaicans abroad in making tangible contributions to economic and social projects in their island home. The Ambassador will also provide a quick update on the state of relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ivan. Sounding a self-reliant theme in earlier public appearances, Dr. Shirley has called the hurricane “a regional natural disaster,” and has stressed that a common CARICOM approach is needed to effectively respond to future catastrophes of this nature and has called on policymakers and opinion leaders to devise comprehensive strategies to deal with these threats.

Seeking to capitalize on a larger expected turnout from the Ambassador’s appearance, JAMPACT will also use the event to kick off their Annual Christmas Treat and Toy Drive supporting five basic schools in Jamaica – St. Stephens, Crescent Road, Mt. Olive, Coles and Maxfield Park. As JAMPACT believes in supporting the local Jamaican economy, the toys, which range from jump-ropes, car sets, dolls, puzzles, crayon and paper sets, are purchased at discount prices from Jamaican based retailers. In addition, JAMPACT will also be selling Jamaican Christmas cards from the Mona Rehabilitation Centre.
