This Mother’s Day weekend, tri-state area matriarchs will be treated to a roots, rocking tribute from some of reggae’s ‘lover’s rock’ giants. On Thursday, May 5th, Jamaican legend Sanchez and singers Ghost, Da’Ville and Romain Virgo, will be performing live at New York’s world famous BB Kings Blues Club & Grill for the Tribute to Mothers concert. Sanchez will also be joining Reggae ambassador Richie Stephens on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8th for the annual Mother’s Day StarTime concert at the Robert Treat Hotel in New Jersey.
Powered by Team Norie and G City Enterprise, the Tribute to Mothers concert will be hosted by DJ Norie of Power 105.1 FM’s Anything Goes – Caribbean Edition. Legendary sound system Afrique Sound Station will be providing classic Reggae and Lover’s Rock tunes, alongside Banky Hype of RoadBlockRadio.com and Chris Dubb Master of Irie Jam Radio 93.5FM.
Known for his timeless reggae approach to American rhythm & blues and gospel standards, Sanchez brings his decades-long catalogue of hits to BB Kings and Robert Treat. Songs like “Loneliness,” “Missing You,” “One In A Million,” and “Frenzy,” have earned Sanchez tremendous honors over the past 25 years, including awards for ‘Best New Artist,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ and ‘Songwriter of the Year,’ by the Rockers, Bins, and International Reggae and World Music Awards, respectively. In 2003 he was inducted into the International Gospel Hall of Fame.
Ghost, easily recognized for his unique singing style and memorable Reggae renditions of pop favorites like Michael Jackson’s “Do You Remember” and Labi Siffre’s “Something Inside So Strong,” comes to BB Kings with well-known singles dating from the late 1980s to the present. Ghost is best known for being part of Dancehall’s Monster Shack Crew, where he lent his vocals to collaborations with fellow members Roundhead and General B. Ghost will share the stage with Da’Ville, who came to prominence in 2006 when he topped reggae charts worldwide with “Can’t Get Over You,” “This Time I Promise,” and “On My Mind.” “On My Mind” was remixed by international Dancehall stalwart Sean Paul, winning the Best Collaboration of the Year award from the International Reggae & World Music Awards in 2008.
Rising star Romain Virgo, whose debut album Romain Virgo peaked at #14 on the Billboard Reggae Charts in 2010, rounds out the Tribute to Mothers Concert line up.
On Mother’s Day, the 2nd Annual Mother’s Day StarTime, hosted by RoadBlockRadio.com, and CCB International, will once again feature Sanchez, this time paired with soulful singer Richie Stephens.
Beginning his career as part of two-time Grammy winning British pop group Soul II Soul, Richie Stephens earned recognition as a solo-artist with the reggae singles “Winner,” “Buss the Place,” “Slop Dem,” “Trying to Get to You,” and “Maniac” with Dancehall champion Bounty Killer. His 1993 track “Legacy,” with Mad Cobra hit #64 on the U.K. Singles charts. He hit #61 in the U.K. with “Come Give Me Your Love” featuring General Degree in 1997. In 2006, he was awarded an Achievement Award by Jamaica’s Governor General for his contributions to civic and social services. His 2008 album Come to Jamaica, was endorsed by the Jamaica Tourist Board for its positive cultural contributions to Jamaican music and tourism.
The Tribute to Mothers concert, featuring Sanchez, Ghost, Da’Ville, and Romain Virgo, will be held on Thursday, May, 5th at BB Kings Blues Club & Grill (237 West 42nd Street at Timesquare in New York City).
