Atlanta Georgia Relays (AGR) Cancelled!!

Spread the love

It is with a heavy heart and tremendous sadness that we announce the cancellation of the 6th staging of the Annual Atlanta Georgia Relays, (AGR) scheduled for May 23 and 24, 2020 at the McEachern High School Track 2395 Brand Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127. We are also saddened that due to scheduling conflicts, postponement is not an option. We will now shift our focus to 2021 and promise it will be the best one yet.

Atlanta Georgia Relays (AGR) Cancelled

The decision, a difficult one, was taken against the spread of the Corona Virus and the resultant increase in cases across the country with many states being affected. We would not be able to host the event  (late May) without putting the lives of our athletes and fans at risk.

When we issued our first advisory in March we were hopeful (even then) of the slightest possibility of staging the relays. We carefully considered what that means for our athletes, whose general health and well-being are of paramount concern to us. Many of our athletes and supporters held out hope with us. Many pleaded with us to make the event a reality to give the athletes a final shot for the season. And we wanted to. It is now apparent however that it won’t be possible. We also have to adhere to State and Federal guidelines which have been implemented to protect the general public.

We know that athletes all across the country and internationally have prepared long and hard for this track season and are feeling a tremendous sense of loss and disappointment. For many it would have been a breakout year; goals would have been accomplished and (in some cases) records shattered. We want to encourage you all to remain focused and committed to every one of your goals. Know that all is not lost. You will come back even stronger next year.

We would like to thank wholeheartedly our committed (AGR) team; our customers, partners, ambassadors, sponsors, stakeholders, the media and friends for supporting and believing in the AGR Brand. It’s been six years of hard work. We thank you for your continued patience, loyalty and understanding. Our success to date is because of you.

These were circumstances beyond our control, but we intend to make next year’s event more spectacular so we hope you all will join us then. We will all work through these challenging times together.

Finally, as we look to 2021 we are mindful that there are needs within our track and field community that will be more urgent now more than ever.  Many of our athletes will be displaced and many families will suffer hardships.  AGR was founded out of a desire to assist youth in the Atlanta Georgia region that needed opportunity and an outlet for their talent. We will stay true to our mission during this crisis and will be implementing initiatives to assist our athletes in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for our announcements.

We continue to pray for the health and well-being of everyone.

About AGR

The Atlanta Georgia Relays (AGR) was started through the work of our non-profit organization, our affiliate, Atlanta Spartans Track Club (ASTC). Our work through ASTC focused on helping youths in the greater Atlanta community.  AGR provides an avenue for self-actualization through sport; a pathway to excellence, the fulfilment of dreams and allows our youth to do something that they love while utilizing their talents. Local track and field coaches and volunteers were invaluable in their assistance.

The ASTC has benefitted from the staging of the Atlanta Georgia Relays which helps to cover expenses, provide uniforms and equipment for the athletes. Additionally, our athletes now have greater college opportunities through scholarships as college representative scouts are present at our meet.
