Lightning Bolt Strikes. The race heard around the world took place at the new Icahn Stadium, New York City on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the fourth staging of the Reebok Grand Prix. Jamaica’s sprint sensation Usain Bolt decimated a quality field in the Digicel sponsored Men’s 100 meters event, stopping the clock at 9.72 seconds to set a new world record in front of a partisan, capacity crowd of 10, 000 fans headed by Youth, Sports & Culture Minister, Hon. Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange and Consul General of Jamaica, Mrs. Geneive Brown Metzger and Dr. Stephen Metzger. Two hours earlier, sprint queen Veronica Campbell Brown struck first, putting to rest any lingering doubts as to her level of preparedness heading into the Jamaica national team trials, with another explosive 10.92 seconds outing to win the Visa sponsored women’s century dash.
