Ms. Ivelyn Harris, Maroon herbalist of Cornwall Barracks, Portland, is one of Jamaica’s leading native experts on the healing applications of plants in Jamaica. Ivelyn has spent over thirty-years, documenting, studying and applying the healing properties of herbs found in Jamaica. Unfortunately, in the face of the steady erosion and modernization of Maroon culture, this invaluable, traditional Jamaican knowledge is becoming more and more rare. Ivelyn’s latest book Healing Herbs of Jamaica is therefore especially timely and welcome.
Ms. Ivelyn Harris will be launching Healing Herbs of Jamaica from 3-5PM on Thursday, 10 March 2011, in the Institute of Jamaica’s Lecture Hall. Healing Herbs is an invaluable repository of natural herbal remedies, which have been tested and used by Jamaica’s Maroons for over 300 years. This publication is a product of her experience in collecting and cultivating medicinal herbs, and her expertise in using these natural products to cure health problems, along with the combined taxonomic knowledge of Jamaica’s leading botanists, such as Prof. George Proctor and Dr. Keron Campbell.
Featured speakers at the March 10 Book Launch of Healing Herbs of Jamaica will include Prof. Carolyn Cooper who will speak on the cultural value of Ivelyn’s work, and Kimberly John, who will speak on the scientific and environmental importance of Ivelyn’s work. Ivelyn will speak about her new book, and then will engage questions from the audience. Books will be available for sale and she will sign them. This Book Launch and Signing is Free and Open to the Public.
Healing Herbs was launched in the United States in January 2011, and was very well received by physicians, academics and naturopaths.
“The Healing Herbs of Jamaica provides a true application of traditional Herbalism. How refreshing to experience Ivelyn’s heartfelt encounters of herbal healing with the people. She has created a book filled with her passion, knowledge, and wisdom. The essence of her Maroon heritage has been successfully preserved for the world to appreciate. I enjoyed every page of the material medica; the plants came alive, as she discussed the authentic healing testimonies of each person’s condition. Knowledge should be passed on to future generations. Thank you, Ivelyn for carrying on your ancestral herbal tradition. The world and its inhabitants will appreciate your contribution to world herbalism. I think anyone interested in herbal medicines will benefit from the timeless information shared. Highly recommended!” – Joanna T. Helms BA, AHG-RH
“Healing Herbs of Jamaica is a revolutionary book for at least 2 reasons. First it is a compendium of what and how to use herbs in healing for numerous common conditions. That alone makes it invaluable to anyone interested in herbal healing natural medicine or simply alternative medicine.
The second reason is this is the only book to take a piece of human history that was about to be lost forever and translate it into easy to use modern standard. Kudos to Dr Sears and Ivy Harris for their foresight and contribution to human kind. This little work is a must have if you want to use Mother Nature to stay healthy! It has information you simply can’t find anywhere else.” – Dr Dave Woynarowski MD author “The Immortality Edge”
