“We notice all DCC host countries have made it to the second round, we don’t plan to break that pattern” – Maurice Victoire, Manager for Martinique National Team.
Group E of the Digicel Caribbean Championships (DCC) will start today in the cosmopolitan French island of Martinique. The group starts with hosts Martinique playing their friendly rival St Vincent at 8pm. The second match of the group takes place on Wednesday September 17 with St. Vincent playing Anguilla and the group matches end on Friday September 19 with Martinique playing Anguilla in the first meeting between the two teams.
Manager of the Martinique National Team and Vice President of the League de Football de Martinique, Maurice Victoire, explains how Martinique football benefits from the tournament: “We are very happy to host the Digicel Caribbean Championships. Here in Martinique we do not have a lot of competitive games and being a French department, we are not able to participate in the World Cup qualifiers, so DCC is our World Cup. We are putting all our energy behind this tournament. We would love to have DCC every year.”
Commenting on the readiness of the Martinique team, Victoire said: “The team is ready. We participated in a football camp in St. Lucia in August to help prepare. We notice that all the DCC host countries have made it to the second round, we don’t plan to break that pattern.
“This is an exciting group for us because we have only played St. Vincent in friendlies so it will be interesting to play them in a full international and Anguilla is new to us as we have never played them before so it should make for an exciting three days.”
Martinique will leave for France on Saturday September 20 to participate in the Overseas French Department Tournament, and to accommodate this, the CFU and Digicel have moved DCC Group E to play before Group D, hosted by St. Kitts, September 24 – 28.
Digicel Caribbean Championships’ Group E starts today at the Louis Achille Stadium in Fort de France, Martinique and ends on Friday September 19. Group E includes Martinique, St. Vincent and Anguilla.
