In October, The Caribbean Savouries Team attended the internationally renowned World in Germany. Anuga is not only the largest food and beverage fair in the world; it´s also the sector´s most important fair for new markets. It is the perfect place to bring the most promising food brands to the international food markets. The fair came at a perfect times as on the 31st August 2011 Caribbean Savouries launched three new products which were made available in the Ethnic frozen section of ASDA stores across the United Kingdom.
The first 2 products are Cassava also known as “Bammy”. Bammies will be available in two formats, Sticks and Cocktails. The third product is Sweet Ripe Plantains. The sweet ripe plantain is easy to prepare, microwave in one minute or heat a portion in the oven for 10 minutes. Ideal as a side dish can also be eaten for breakfast with toast along with your favourite spread. In Jamaica “Bammy” is a popular meal enjoyed by both residents and visitors of the tropical island. It is made from Cassava root (a vegetable in the yam family); which is very rich in starch and contains significant amounts of calcium, dietary fiber, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin b6 and vitamin C and is also Gluten Free
The Plantain is a “Banana-like” vegetable which can be served with a savoury main course or with dessert. Scientific studies have also suggested that plantains may be useful in preventing or treating kidney and bladder problems. Plantains contain ten times more beta carotene than bananas, as well as having a good supply of Vitamins A, C, B6, potassium, folate, iron, and magnesium. The amount of Vitamin A in the fruit depends on the colour; the more yellow the flesh, the more Vitamin A it contains. A deep yellow fruit can provide as much as 1200 IU’s of Vitamin A in a 3.5 ounce serving. . A cup of sliced plantain only contains 181 calories.
