REGGAE STAR MAXI PRIEST HEADLINES MIRAMAR FESTIVAL
International reggae super-star, Maxi Priest will be the featured artist at this year’s CaribeFest – a free multi-cultural festival focusing on the music, food and culture of the Caribbean – on Sunday, September 4, (Labor Day Weekend) 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. at Lakeshore Park, 8501 S. Sherman Circle in Miramar.
“We are very excited to have Maxi Priest perform at CaribeFest 2005,” commented Alex Davis, director of CaribeFest Inc., who along with the City of Miramar has staged the event over the last two years. “His tremendous popularity as well as his cross-over appeal will definitely attract a large audience to this year’s event.” Davis added.
Since his 1988 debut, Maxi has enjoyed tremendous success as a singer with popularity and recognition around the world. In fact, he is one of the most successful reggae solo artists in the world, ranking with an elite few in the company of reggae legend Bob Marley. He has enjoyed numerous worldwide hits as well as a Number one pop chart smash Close To You, which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and number two on the Hot R&B Singles Chart. Maxi is widely credited with helping spread the gospel of reggae and Caribbean music.
His soon to be released album 2 The Max includes the dancehall anthems Full Hundred and Sweat A Go Buss (featuring Beres Hammond) and the hot new single Believe In Love on the hot “Drop Leaf” rhythm.
Tabou Combo, one of the most recognizable and influential Haitian bands will also be appearing at the festival. True ambassadors of Konpa, the popular music of Haiti, Tabou Combo have performed in Europe, Asia, Africa and several North American cities. The group has written numerous hits and has been together since 1968. Their worldwide appeal and popularity will attract a large contingent of devoted fans to CaribeFest 2005.
Carrying the Soca flame and bringing a lot of heat to the stage will be Leon Coldero and Code 868 band, who will also be appearing at this year’s festival. Coldero’s career began in the mid-Eighties with the band Sound Revolution in Trinidad. He went solo in 1991, and his popularity increased during the next decade as a featured vocalist with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. He’s known for sexy and shirtless high-energy performances, generating a party sound that’s heavy on rapid-fire digital samples and percussion.
Other performers scheduled to appear at CaribeFest 2005 include the Virgin Islands Mocko Jumbie Stilt Dancers, Haitian group Da Minted, local Reggaeton favorites Sofla Kingz along with popular DJs spinning the latest selection of Hip-Hop, Reggae, Soca, Compa and Salsa hits between scheduled entertainment.
There will be a kid’s play area with inflatable rides, face paintings and other activities to keep the children busy, plus a variety of booths selling Caribbean food, drinks and craft items, creating a true Caribbean festival atmosphere. Patrons can try their luck by entering raffles with a chance to win an all-inclusive getaway courtesy of Super Clubs, or round-trip airline tickets courtesy of Air Jamaica and admission tickets to Disney World in Orlando.
