Former Prime Minister and Special Representative of CARICOM on Haiti, the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson, will update members of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), about the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti, at a breakfast meeting to be held at the Terra Nova Hotel, on Thursday, April 8.

The briefing follows on Mr Patterson’s meetings with regional heads of government and the United Nations; which resulted in the establishment of a Multi-Donor Reconstruction Fund for Haiti and an Interim Haiti Recovery Commission.

PSOJ President Joseph M Matalon and Honorary Secretary, Earl Jarrett, will also participate in the meeting, which will focus on the economic, social and institutional reconstruction of the country that was devastated by a 7.0 earthquake on January 12, killing more than 230,000 Haitians and leaving approximately 1.2 million homeless.

The main objective of the meeting is to provide members of the Jamaican private sector with an overview of the assessed range of damage to the Haitian infrastructure, estimated economic loss, and pledges made by states and international agencies to support the reconstruction process. It will also highlight “areas for business” and how Jamaican companies can contribute to the development of the new Haiti.

Participants will be advised about strategic approaches for regional joint ventures and the remit of the CARICOM Special Representative’s Office, in its work with the Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana and the CARICOM Office in Haiti, with the Jamaican office serving as a hub to facilitate regional interventions.
