Award winning executive chef, Brian Lumley has been selected as one of the influencers for the upcoming Carifta Track and Field Championships to be held in Kingston, Jamaica next April 16 – 18.
In an out of the box move by the local organizing committee on Thursday, Chairman, Mike Fennell says “we are delighted to have Brian on board. We have recognized your career. You’ve set a path on your own profession that we think can be linked with the youngsters.”
The Chairman went on to note that this appointment is “about inspiring the youngsters who may even pursue something outside of sport. The current post Brian holds as an executive chef “consists of elements of an athlete’s journey in terms of image.”
Brian, in response, says “ I feel honoured to have been selected and recognized by the organizing committee.” He went on to say “ I don’t take this request lightly and if I can influence anyone, I just want to impact on someone in a useful way.”
JAAA President, Garth Gayle extended welcome on behalf of track and field. “This appointment will go a long way in recognizing that the sport and track and field remains one of the bright sparks in sport in Jamaica and the region. We know your influence from your body of work will inspire athletes across the region.”
Brian’s role, though ceremonial, will require him to post messages on social media, make appearances and even attend the event. He is among a list of six that will be selected.
Jamaica’s hosting of the event will coincide with a number of milestones
50 years of the Carifta Games (started in Barbados in 1972)
60 years of Independent Jamaica (August)
90 years of the JAAA (October)
Approximately 600 athletes from 27 territories are scheduled to participate in the event. Jamaica will go in search of the 44th title… having won already on 43 occasions.
