Jamaica Gears Up To Celebrate 48 Years Of Independence With A Wide Range Of Cultural Activities

Jamaicans across the United States and on the island are preparing to commemorate the country’s 48th year of Independence on August 6 as well as the 172nd anniversary of Jamaica’s emancipation from slavery. The island will come alive with exciting cultural activities and visitors will have a chance to celebrate with locals as costumed groups parade the streets and march to the sounds of traditional rhythms. Members of the Jamaican Diaspora community in the U.S. will also host a number of events including church services, flag raising ceremonies and Independence Balls in honor of the island’s historical milestone.

“This year marks another significant moment in Jamaica’s history. As we reflect on our past we can truly appreciate the leaps and bounds Jamaica has made to position itself as a progressive nation whose unmistakable culture resonates within the hearts of many,” said John Lynch, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. “The planned activities showcase the richness of the island’s culture and history and emphasize the beauty of Jamaica’s people, food, music and traditional dances that have made the destination a preferred choice for travelers. We look forward to sharing our heritage with visitors and encourage Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica to join us in these memorable celebrations.”
