More than US $3,200 was recently raised by the Jamaica Consulate in Miami to benefit the Swift Purcell Boys Home in St. Mary and the Jamaica Christian Boys Home in Kingston.

The funds are proceeds from the annual Ecumenical Independence church service held early August in Fort Lauderdale and attended by over 1,000 Jamaican nationals and friends.

Since 2003, the proceeds from the annual event have gone to the Swift Purcell Boys Home to benefit some 67 boys from age six to 18 years, resident at the orphanage.

Donations have assisted in administrative details as well as scholarship funds for students enrolled at tertiary institutions.

Several of the residents are enrolled in tertiary institutions where they are pursuing studies in the arts, hospitality management, agricultural science and vocational programs. Others are enrolled in primary and secondary schools.

This year, some residents at the Jamaica Christian Boys Home in Kingston will also benefit from the proceeds.

Approximately 30 boys ranging from age 5 through 19 are residents at that institution which is home to orphans and also provide assistance to those in lesser fortunate circumstances. According to the Director of the Boys Home, Miss Fannie Knight, all residents are enrolled at educational institutions. They are also involved in vocational projects at the institution where they are engaged in woodwork and farming.
