Shanghai Gets First J’can Eatery As Caribbean Association In China Plans One Year Anniversary Celebration, Shanghai, March 20, 2008

Members and friends of the Caribbean Association in China (CAC) today gathered at Shanghai’s first Jamaican/Caribbean eatery — Uncle Mike’s Jamaican Patties — to discuss a dinner planned to mark the association’s upcoming one year anniversary celebrations.

In addition to patties, the restaurant, which opened on March 17, serves up old favourites such as jerk, curry goat, rice and peas, festival, peas soup, and oxtail while adding a few innovations to the menu with its rasta wrap and reggae rice. Located in the Food Inn Building in a high-traffic popular shopping area, Uncle Mike’s has been doing brisk business since it opened its doors.

According to the restaurant’s China representative, trade consultant and CAC president Dr Nicoleen Johnson, Uncle Mike’s is owned by a Jamaican-based company called Tradersco. “The reception has been overwhelming so far, especially among the foreigners in Shanghai,” said Johnson who set up the restaurant in Shanghai’s Pudong area. “Most customers are simply curious to know about Jamaican/Caribbean food while others who are already familiar with our cuisine are ecstatic to know that it’s now available in Shanghai.”  

Uncle Mike’s will partially sponsor the catering of CAC’s April 26 First Anniversary Dinner, offering members and their guests authentic Caribbean flavours that will be accompanied by Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, rum, and Caribbean Music.
