Overseas Community To Help Families Of Truck Accident

As news of the December 19, 2008,s tragic accident continues to make the round through the Diaspora community, a number of individuals and organizations are coming forward to help families of the victims.

Consul General of Jamaica in New York, Mrs. Geneive Brown Metzger said on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, said that she was saddened by the nature and scope of the accident, which claimed the lives of 14 persons from the parish of Portland.

The accident involving a truck, loaded with persons and produce on their way to the market in Kingston, was said to be the worst in the country in almost 30 years,

She said that she has been in contact with the chairman of the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board/NE USA, Patrick Beckford and would be appealing to the overseas community for help especially for the families including the more than 50 children left behind.

Consul General Brown Metzger said that the Diaspora community was standing by to help as soon as the Government and related agencies complete their needs assessment. Mrs. Brown Metzger expressed concern particularly for the children who instead of celebrating the joys of the holiday season, were now mourning the untimely loss of their parents and loved ones.

Mrs. Brown Metzger reminded the overseas community to keep the affected families in their prayers at this time and noted that as soon as the special fund to benefit the victims’ families was established at the National Commercial Bank (NCB), Jamaica, the information will be disseminated forthwith.

Consul General Brown Metzger said that based on reports coming out of Kingston, Jamaica, the Government was doing all it can at this time to help the families of the victims and all Jamaicans at home to cope with this horrible tragedy at this time.
