PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CULTURAMA 2004; RICH IN FOLK TRADITION AND HISTORY
Culturama 2004 a variety show featuring over forty children from various schools in Jamaica will be staged at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Sunday, August 1st at 7:00 p.m. in celebration of emancipation and Jamaica’s forty-second independence anniversary.
Featured groups include the Clonmel Primary & Junior High Schools, Tivoli Gardens Dancers, the Blue Glades Mento Band, the St. Ann’s Senior Citizens Group and Malachai Smith.
The groups will entertain the audience with a dazzling display of traditional folk dances such as Quadrille, Dinki Mini, and Maypole as well as a serving of traditional folk songs and popular songs. The highlight of the evening will be the “Nine Night Celebration” performed by the St. Ann’s Senior Citizens Group. This will be an enactment of a real “Nine Night Celebration” as practiced by earlier rural communities in Jamaica with all the coffee, white rum, singing and dancing.
According to Sydney Roberts, president of Jamaica Awareness Inc., “Culturama 2004 is truly a family event. Grandmothers, Aunts, Uncles, Mothers and Fathers should all take the children to see this show, especially if they are born here, so that they get a true taste of our rich Jamaican heritage and culture.” Roberts also stated that “It is amazing how talented these children from Jamaica are, and we need to support them in a very big way as they continue the tradition of our ancestors.” The group will perform in Tampa on July 31st, before coming to Ft. Lauderdale on August 1st.
Tickets for Culturama 2004 are available at selected Caribbean Outlets and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts box office. Advance tickets cost $20.00 and $25.00 for adults, children under 12 cost $15.00
