Digicel Kick Start Clinics Draw To A Close In Trinidad

The penultimate leg of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics in the Caribbean concluded on Friday evening at the St. Mary’s Grounds, Port of Spain, with the Digicel Kick Start Clinics Under 17 team defeating a combined Pro League Under 17 side 3-2 in an exciting match.

Digicel Kick Start Clinics Head Coach, John Barnes, said that the Trinidad leg of the Clinics was very good. “The quality of football was very good and regardless of whether anyone here is selected to go to Sunderland, the boys showed great talent and an excellent attitude.”

It was a very competitive match with some members of the Pro League team having played on the national Under 17 for Trinidad and Tobago which provided great opposition for the Digicel Kick Start team.

Barnes, an energetic and hard working individual said that the philosophy he is trying to instill in these talented young footballers is one of hard work and discipline.

“The boys have learnt a lot of new drills over the last two days – some of which they may take with them back to their clubs, but what I really hope is that from everything they’ve learnt, they will pay particular attention to the mental discipline required for this game. I hope they will take what I have shared with them and that these qualities and attributes stay with them.”

Sponsorship and PR Manager for Digicel Trinidad and Tobago, Marita Laurent, said: “It was a great opportunity for the national Under 17 team to take part in the Digicel Kick Start Clinics. John Barnes also visited several other communities while he was here in Trinidad to speak to our talented young footballers about life as a professional player.”

Next stop for the Digicel Kick Start Clinics is St. Kitts & Nevis, where the excitement for the final leg of the Clinics has been building over the last few weeks. Not only are St. Kitts and Nevis’ Under 16 players bracing themselves for two days packed with excitement under the guidance of John Barnes, but equally so, players from Jamaica, Barbados, Suriname, Haiti and Trinidad will be waiting to see who John Barnes selects to spend one week training at Sunderland AFC in September.

The Digicel Kick Start Clinics will be heading to Central America for the first time in August, where Clinics will be held in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador. The six best players will be selected to train with Liverpool FC in October for a week.
