Digicel today announced its sponsorship of the Haitian Compas Festival for a fourth year running. The event will be held at the Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida this Saturday May 19th 2012. The festival, now in its 14th year, is a celebration of Haiti’s rich musical culture and Digicel is eager to make this year’s festival a memorable experience for all its patrons.

The Compas Festival is the largest Haitian event in the United States – drawing more than 30,000 patrons to listen to the sounds of traditional and contemporary Compas music. This year’s festival will feature popular artists such as Robert Charlot, Gabel, Alan Cavé, Belo, Mikaben, Zenglen, TPO, J. Perry, Nu-Look, Kreyol La and Digicel Brand Ambassadors, Carimi, Harmonik and Djakout Mizik, along with specially invited guests, L’Orchestre Tropicana d’Haiti. Leading up to the festival, Digicel’s Brand Ambassadors, Carimi, will visit Edison High School tomorrow, Friday May 18th 2012 from 12.30pm to give a motivational talk, encouraging kids to focus on their education and follow their dreams, and Harmonik will be greeting fans, signing autographs and doing ticket giveaways in the Unitransfer at the Clement Store in Little Haiti from 3 to 6pm.

The DigiGirls will be on hand on the day to add to the party atmosphere as well as show customers how to use Digicel Top Up to send credit to loved ones back home. And one lucky Digicel Top Up customer will also get the chance to enter the Digicel Cash Vault to win cash and other cool prizes.

Diaspora Sales Operations Executive for the French Caribbean, Jean-Edouard Vanté, said; “Digicel is proud to be a part of an event that celebrates the heritage of its Haitian customers living in the Diaspora and the team will be on hand so that customers can stay connected to their friends and family using Digicel Top Up methods that will be conveniently located at the venue.

“This year’s Compas Music Festival promises to be even bigger and better with artists including Carimi, Djakout, Harmonik, and specially invited guest band, L’Orchestre Tropicana d’Haiti lined up to perform.

“Leading up the event, Digicel Brand Ambassadors, Carimi, will be visiting Edison High School tomorrow (Friday) from 12.30pm, meeting with the students and talking to them about their lives and the struggles they had to overcome in order to rise to the top. They will also be talking about the importance of staying in school and getting a good education in order to prepare for success later on in life. Harmonik will be greeting fans and signing autographs in the Unitransfer at the Clement Store in Little Haiti from 3 to 6pm,” continued Vanté.

Compas music originated in Haiti in the 1800s, and later developed into a modern Merengue that draws inspiration from Latin, Jazz, and Rhythm and Blues musical elements. The popularity of the music has spread from Haiti to other countries, including the French West Indies, Canada, France, Africa, Panama, Cape Verde, South America and North America.
