The competition in the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010 stepped up a notch last night as the Group A matches came to a close in Puerto Rico and the Group B matches kicked off in Kingstown, St. Vincent.

Group A hosts, Puerto Rico, emerged the winners seeing off Anguilla (3-1), St. Martin (2-0) and Cayman (2-0) putting them through to Group E in Stage Two – the first time they have got this far in the Digicel Caribbean Cup. Group E will see them face Grenada, Guadeloupe and the Winners of Group B in Grenada on October 20th – 24th.

Group B games – which kicked off last night – saw hosts, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, beat Montserrat 7-0 – sending a clear message to all other Caribbean teams that they intend to go further in this year’s tournament than they did with their superb giant-killing run in 2006. Barbados drew 1-1 with St. Kitts and Nevis and will face Montserrat and St. Vincent and the Grenadines respectively tomorrow evening to determine their fate.

Football fans can follow the action on TV with games being broadcast on terrestrial free to air TV – on a delayed basis (market depending – see press for details). Digicel’s 30-minute post-match programmes will commence in November, rounding up the best of behind the scenes, features, interviews and match action from every Group in the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010.

Boasting the largest cash prize for football in the region, the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010 kicked off in Puerto Rico on October 2nd before moving on to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Groups C and D will take place in Suriname and the Dominican Republic respectively to complete Stage One. Some of the higher ranked teams – Cuba, Guadeloupe and Trinidad and Tobago – will join the tournament in the qualification stage playing across three host countries including Grenada and Antigua and Barbuda.

The eight best teams from the region will play in the finals in Martinique for the title of Digicel Caribbean Cup champions 2010 and walk away with US$120,000. Runners up will take home US$70,000 and third and fourth place winners will win US$50,000 and US$30,000 respectively. The top four countries will also advance to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States.
