In January 2010, Jamaica Impact, Inc. (JAMPACT, Inc.) in partnership with the Consulate General of Jamaica, New York will launch a discussion series titled, “The Quest for Growth: Unlocking the Keys to Jamaica’s Economic Growth and Development.” The purpose of this discussion series is to conduct a critical review the economic and business climate in Jamaica, and discuss the challenges to sustainable economic growth. In the process, we hope to stimulate dialogue and discussion, as well as the sharing of potential solutions to Jamaica’s economic growth, while engaging members of the Diaspora to contribute to the socioeconomic development of Jamaica.
In the third installment of our series, “The Quest for Growth: Unlocking the Keys to Jamaica’s Economic Growth and Development,” we invite Mr. Fritz-Earle McLymont to discuss the role of government policies in creating viable economic reform in Jamaica. The discussion will cover Jamaica’s economic policies and the advantages and disadvantages of each policy. In addition, the discussion will include an overview of Jamaica’s current tax policy debate as well as government policies that are being promoted by both parties to stimulate growth, such as the debt exchange program. This panel will also discuss the impact and future implications of failed economic policies on social order, and the potential for societal unrest.
