The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) is now accepting entries for the 2013 World Reggae Dance Championship. The Championship is open to dance groups of 3 to 6 persons, 16 years of age and older, residing in and outside of Jamaica. Entries are welcomed in the categories of Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Reggae Contemporary/Classic, Reggae Dancehall and Dance Narrative.
JCDC in an effort to celebrate and promote our indigenous dances, developed the one of a kind World Reggae Dance Championship in 2006 to give our professional and amateur ‘reggae dance lovers’, the opportunity to develop their creative talent in utilizing local genres of dance and to ‘bring it’ from all over the world. This event is highly entertaining and attracts thousands of young supporters who are wowed by electrifying dances by both local and international competitors.
According to Juliet Cowan-Morgan, Competition Coordinator, “the aim of the competition is to reach young people who have unique dancing skills and talents that can provide entertainment value and also to develop the talent for economic self-reliance.”
In 2009, the competition received its first international entry from Japan, The IVAN Dance Group which was placed second that year; they continued to enter each year and in 2012, won the Championship to the amazement of many Jamaicans. The JCDC World Reggae Dance Championship now has an international appeal and is one of the fastest growing products with respect to audience support.
The first World Reggae Dance Elimination Show will be held at the Grace Super Fun Day on Easter Monday, April 1, 2013 at Goodyear Sport Club, Morant Bay, St. Thomas.
Entry form for the 2013 competition is available at the JCDC Head Office located at 3-5 Phoenix Avenue, Kingston 10, all JCDC parish offices island-wide and online at www.jcdc.gov.jm. The forms can be dropped off at any JCDC Parish Office or taken to the elimination shows.
