An evening of three separate but interlinking presentations—one of the written word, one on the screen, and one on the stage. The first will be presented by Andrene Bonner, author of ‘Olympic Gardens’; the film portion consists of the documentary Saracca and Nation, which examines cultural performances in the Caribbean; lastly, on the stage, Ron Bobb Semple captures the ‘Spirit of Marcus Garvey’.
St. Francis College—Little Theatre, 182 Remsen St, Brooklyn, NY 11210
Sunday, February 21. 3pm AND 6:30pm
On Page! – ‘Olympic Gardens’, Andrene Bonner (Jamaica)
“a powerful evocation of the life of an unwanted child. Bonner writes with a keen eye for telling events and an ear for the details of island life.”
On Screen! – ‘Saracca and Nation’, Merle Collins (Grenada)
“Saracca” commemorates the harvest. “Nation” refers to the “Big Drum Nation Dance”. These cultural performances owe their existence to inherited memory of Africa and to the “re-creation” within the Caribbean spaces.
On Stage! – ‘Spirit of Marcus Garvey’, Ron Bobb Semple (Guyana)
Pulling heavily on Garvey’s writings, this captivating presentation places the early twentieth century pan-Africanist’s message in a stark modern context.
