The Jamaica football fraternities in New York and Jamaica are mourning the loss of one of their own, former Excelsior High School and Harbour View Football Club player, Cornell ‘Duece’ Dyce. Cornell who passed away on January 31, 2011, in New York was 49 years old.
Cornell grew up on Reef Avenue in Harbour View where he attended Harbor View Primary School. He went on to Wolmer’s Boys School then Excelsior High where he excelled in football and was a winning member of Excelsior’s ’79 Manning and Walker Cup teams.
Cornell went on to represent Harbour View at the youth level in the Minor Leagues under seventeen competitions and later on at the senior level playing in the National and Major Leagues.
Cornell, who migrated to the U.S. in 1981, attended Brooklyn College. He became a member of that institution’s Soccer Team, representing the United States of America in Nepal in 1986; where they went on to win the tournament. Cornell was named the tournament’s MVP.
“Deuce later joined many popular soccer teams in New York, such as Mandela United in the Bronx, Buffalo United in Brooklyn, and NY Hota Bavarian Soccer Club, and Lions United on Long Island, just to name a few.
Cornell is survived by wife Carol and his three daughters, Coneilia 26, Camisha 23, and Candice 16; parents Beresford and Joycelyn.
A memorial service was held for Cornell on Saturday, February 19, 2011, in New York.
