South Florida’s celebration of Jamaica’s 51st independence anniversary will reach a high point at the staging of the annual Jamaica Independence & Cultural Celebration (JICC), scheduled for Sunday, August 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway. Thousands are expected to turn out, dressed in the island’s national colours of Black, Gold and Green, to enjoy a variety of delicious Jamaican food, music and entertainment in a joyous celebration.
Headlining the entertainment package is four-time Festival Song Contest winner Roy Rayon, who will electrify the stage with his winning songs Love Fever (1985), Give Thanks and Praise (1987), Come Rock (1991) and 2008’s Rise and Shine. Also appearing will be The Melodians, one of Jamaica’s greatest Rock steady groups with chart-topping hits such as Rivers of Babylon, You Have Caught Me and Sweet Sensation to name a few. Also scheduled to perform are Florida-based favourites Kashief Lindo, Ambilique, Latty Gouzang, Nikiesha Lindo and Code Red Band.
Children between the ages of 10 and 15 can participate in a talent contest, showcasing their talent in music, dance, spoken word or the open category. According to organizer Denver “Jamusa” Silvera, “the talent contest is generating quite an interest and we want the kids to get an opportunity to shine and be recognized for their special abilities.” Silvera urged parents to bring the children out early as there are many prizes to be won.
Advance tickets are $5 and are available at selected Caribbean outlets in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Day of event tickets are $12 at the gate, children 12 and under are admitted Free.
