On Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at 2.30 pm, there will be a press conference and information session to announce the UK production phase of HERO, a feature documentary film currently in production, that is inspired by the life of Trinidadian war hero, lawyer, and diplomat Ulric Cross. The event will take place at the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission, 42 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8NT.
The press conference will serve to introduce the Caribbean UK Diaspora community to the Hero Project. Interviews and dramatisations have already been filmed in Trinidad. Over the next few months, the Hero Team will be recruiting actors, crew and local partners to shoot in the UK later this year. HERO is scheduled for release in 2014.
The 75 minute feature documentary takes place in the UK, the Caribbean and Africa, with a story that spans most of the major events of the 20th century, including Cross’ early years growing up in colonial Trinidad, his war years as a navigator with the elite Pathfinders Force of the RAF, his time as a Talks Producer with the BBC, his role as a key legal adviser to Heads of State in newly independent Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania, and his service as the T&T High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in the nineties.
The film’s director is British-born Trinidadian filmmaker Frances-Anne Solomon, a former BBC Drama Producer and founder/CEO of the acclaimed CaribbeanTales Group of companies. Ms. Solomon states: “HERO explores not just the life, but also the times that Ulric Cross was born into, and starred in. It highlights the often unsung heroism of many Trinbagonian and Diaspora nationals whose lives intersected with his, including George Padmore, CLR James, Henry Sylvester Williams, Learie Constantine, and Una Marsden. Ultimately, the film is about us, who we are as Caribbean people and as citizens of the world.”
HERO is produced by Hero Film Limited, and partners to date include Republic Bank T&T (Title Sponsor), the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company, BG T&T, Visual Arts and Production, and LIAT.
Speakers at the Press conference will include Director/Producer Frances-Anne Solomon; Mr Rudolph Walker, Actor and UK Patron of the HERO Project and Mr Felix Cross, MBE, Composer and Artistic Director of Nitro Musical Theatre Company.
