Household Workers Union Lauds Labour Minister

The Jamaica Household Workers Union is in full support of a recent call made by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Derrick Kellier, for household workers to be protected under the Factories Act.

In an interview with JIS News, President of the Jamaica Household Workers Union, Shirley Pryce, lauded the Minister for his continued efforts in making representation for the safety of all Jamaican workers, especially those who work within households.

“I must congratulate the Minister for making this move. I think it is a very good initiative because domestic workers are just like any other worker. So whatever laws are put in place, it should cover domestic workers as well because they are contributing to nation building as well,” she expressed.

Ms. Pryce added that the announcement coincides with an education project which the 3,800-member strong union plans to implement this year. The project will inform household workers on the proper use of chemicals and other products that are used in the home.

Minister Kellier made the call for more work places to be covered under the Factories Act at the recently held World Safety and Health Day Symposium in Kingston, themed: ‘Safety and Health in the use of Chemicals at Work’.

He said the Act will provide coverage for the country’s 58,000 household workers against harmful chemicals.

This, he added, is in keeping with the Government’s commitment to the safety and protection of all workers.

The Factories Regulations Act states that workers are to be provided with healthy and safe environments and, where applicable, be given the necessary protective clothing.
