June 2011 Event Schedule

Friday, June 3 – (7:00 PM to 10:00 PM)
Art Exhibition Opening
“Vibrant Facets of the Caribbean Culture”

Featuring Karl Jerry Craig (Jamaica) and Philippe Dodard (Haiti), Turgo Bastien and Genevieve “Iris” Lahens, (Haiti), and Ana Delgado (Cuba), along with artists of the Caribbean, including LIVE Island music, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and specialty “wines of the islands” by Chef of Distinction, Judith Able (Jamaica).

Karl Jerry Craig was born on the beautiful island of Jamaica and emigrated to England where he won a scholarship to St. Martin’s School of Art in London.  Jerry uses the jeweled colors of the Caribbean’s flora and fauna and the undulating shapes of the landscape as inspiration for many of his paintings.  His work is a rich tapestry in abstract symbolism, frequently retracing the roots of the peoples of the Caribbean, Africa, and the Americas.

Philippe Dodard was born in Haiti in 1954 and “Art, as a fairy,” invited itself to his birth which, at a very young age led him to such Haitian masters as Jean-Claude Garoute (Tiga), Patrick Vilaire and Frido – founders of the Poto-Mitan School who initiated him in the “Rotation Artistique” method and it’s four steps of art, craft, skill development, and science. Dodards impact on the art of the contemporary era will certainly be the subject of future studies.

Turgo Bastien has a singular approach to metaphor and the conscious look for new direction and language which could inscribe his identity in a contemporary expression.  Turgo tells a story that rises as counter discourse to the story of mainstream art in which other cultures have been treated marginal.  The outcome of his sight is heightened awareness that what we have in common is far greater than what divides us.

Genevieve Lahens, known mostly as “Iris”, is a Haitian modernist who studied at L’Ecole Beaux Arts in Paris and has an art degree in arcitecture.  Iris’ distinctive style shows influences of Byzantine and medieval periods with intricate geometric patterns and folk art symbols and executed in bold Haitian colors.

Ana Albertina Delgado is an award winning contemporary artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude, from the Higher Institute of Arts, Havana, Cuba.  Her feminist vision encompasses mysticism, surreal dreamstates and a visceral human sensuality.  Born in Cuba, she currently resides in Miami, Florida with her artist husband, Jose Adriano Buergo and their two daughters.  Her work has appeared in numerous galleries, exhibitions, and museums, locally as well as internationally.

“Arts Salon” with Christine Craig, poet
“All Things Bright & Quadrille for Tigers”

An evening showcasing one of the Caribbean’s most original and innovative poets, Christine Craig. Originally from Jamaica, Christine resides in Fort Lauderdale and has written an anthology that exemplifies sharp observation, disarming honesty about the human heart’s complexities, and a most sophisticated sense of landscape and space. Offering a compelling immersion into what can best be described as Caribbean metaphysical poetics, this collection contains an indigenous secular spirituality that obscures the divide between the spiritual and the sensual.

Friday, June 10 – (7:00 PM to 10:00 PM)
LIVE AT INSPIRED INTERIORS presents
“El Colibri” Jose Angel Navarro, guitar.

Using his technical expertise with the guitar, Navarro has brought the sounds and concepts of Afro-Cuban music to the great concert halls of the world. Navarro’s original compositions for the guitar have been honored and celebrated by the other masters of this instrument as being total innovation in the sense of conceptual sonority and a patrimony inside the composition for the guitar of Latin America. This brilliant virtuoso commands the rapt attention of the audience with his speed, technique, and artistry whether he plays classical, flamenco, jazz, fusion, or new age.
