International Reggae Stars Mighty Diamonds Make Billboard Top 20/Will Tour Africa, Europe And The U.S. This Summer

Jamaica’s premiere  singing group, the Mighty Diamonds, recently made international news when their universal reggae anthem,  “Pass the Kutchie,” appeared  Billboard.com;s, “20 Smokin’ Songs About Weed”  list.

The “Top 20” list was compiled by Billboard.com in honor of April 20, (4/20 Day), an annual celebration of cannabis culture. The Mighty Diamonds share the distinction of being on Billboard.com’s with the likes of  Peter Tosh, Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath and Rick James.

“The Mighty Diamonds’ 1982 classic was loved by many in Jamaica, but exploded  in the U.K. and U.S. when Musical Youth covered it as “Pass the Dutchie,” Billboard.com writes.” “Musical Youth interchanged pots, substituting the “kutchie” with a cooking utensil.”

Co-written by Leroy Sibbles and Jackie Mittoo, “Pass the Kutchie,” one of the Mighty Diamonds’ most beloved songs, has been sampled by everyone from Lauryn Hill to Michael Franti to Wyclef Jean.

This month, the Mighty Diamonds, in partnership with Ujama Productions, announced their summer 2012 world tour, which will kick off in Lagos, Nigeria July 5.
