Jamaicans unable to travel home for the August 6th anniversary are guaranteed IRIETIMES when the 50th celebration of independence goes online “to the world.”
According to Leroy “Dreamy” Riley, “the best place to celebrate, other than Jamaica is at www.irietimes.com”
Riley said from 10 a.m. to midnight, vintage and current music will “reminisce, reflect and relive” the half century Jamaica has established self-rule.
Direct from the ex-Police Association Hall in South Florida, the live broadcast promise marathon coverage that will retrace Jamaica’s historic journey from slave colony to independent nation.
And videos will provide historic document of the island’s transition from Taino Indians’ land base to colonial occupation by Spanish and English.
How Jamaica gained its independence will be detailed in living retrospect with nostalgic references to the highlights leading to Aug. 6, 1962.
The free celebration in Lauderhill will hail the country with a distribution of free Jamaican flags and memorabilia beginning at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Online listeners will be treated to the best of Jamaica’s music — selected by radio personalities Ron Burke, Mark Swaby, Magicmel, Tony Owens, Leslie Grant, DJ Soul 1, Owen Howe, Knolly Derby and DJ Willi.
“Mento, Mille (Small) and Marley (s) are sure-bet selections on the playlist,” Riley said.
“And some (Burning) Spear, Sugar (Minott) and (Lady) Saw too but there will also be Beenie, Buju and Bounty” to satisfy every taste.”
“Miss Lou and Mas’ Ran might even be on the menu,” he added.
Made possible by MARS, JNMS USA Inc., LIME, Golden Krust, Jamaica National, City County Credit Union and IRIETIMES.COM the all-day extravaganza is shaping up to be the best golden jubilee celebration Jamaicans will share live and online.
