If you’ve been reading my blogs, you know that I’ve been wondering why the American left has been so passive while the right has been so rambunctious. Where are the “progressive” demonstrators? Surely, they have as much to yell about as the conservatives (or more)?
And I think I know the answer: They haven’t been pushed quite far enough. Yet.
But I am convinced it’s coming.
The new right (make that the Tea Party) is calling the shots in Congress, and you can bet they’ll do what the Conservatives did in Britain. After their victory in the recent parliamentary elections, David Cameron and his crew didn’t take long to attack Britain’s social safety net. With the economic crisis as their pretext, they slashed government jobs and benefits to the sick, poor and old. Of course, they neglected to make corporations and the rich shoulder their fair share of the burden.
That’s just what the Republicans are fixing to do in the United States.
According to an article in The Nation (click here to read it), the response in the UK has been a grassroots revolt – from the left.
If it’s happening in Britain, I don’t think it will be long before it starts happening in America.
