It’s ridiculous for so-called Democratic politicians to “distance themselves” from the national Democratic Party. These gutless wonders who fear their constituents cannot accept a black presidential candidate should be summarily expelled from the party and have to run as Independents – or Republicans.
The Democratic Party used to stand for something. Americans knew what they were going to get when they elected Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy, men who believed the state had a responsibility to ensure the welfare of its citizens, to protect individuals from bigotry and injustice as well as economic oppression. Today, voters don’t know what that capital D stands for when they look at their ballots.
Joe Lieberman, for example, once ran as the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee. FDR must have been turning in his grave! By what standard could Lieberman be described as a Democrat? He is a warmonger who would sacrifice the lives of any number of young Americans in the interests of a foreign nation. Yes, Joe, Israel is a foreign country. As a U.S. citizen, your first allegiance should be to the United States of America.
Lieberman, who ran as an Independent senate candidate when he failed to get the Democratic Party’s nomination, now pals around with Republican presidential candidate John McCain and no longer caucuses with the Democrats. At least he’s out of the closet. It’s time to purge the party of the other closet Republicans (or whatever).
As I understand it, the Democratic Party has traditionally stood for peace and prosperity, brotherhood and sisterhood, tolerance and compassion. At their best, Republicans stand for such ideals as individual liberty and self-reliance, with minimal dependence on the government. At their worst… well you have George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, Carl Rove and Scooter Libby… Who knows what they stand for?
