The Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board Member– Southern United States will host a Jamaican Community Forum on Thursday, April 14, 2005 at The Holy Family Episcopal Church Hall, 18501 N.W. 7th Avenue, Miami, Florida at 6:30pm.
In June, 2004 the Government of Jamaica in conjunction with several private companies held a two-day Jamaican Diaspora Conference in Kingston, Jamaica. The Conference was the first stage in strengthening ties between Jamaica and Jamaicans in the Diaspora. At the end of the Conference a seven-member Advisory Board was elected to advise the Jamaican Government on issues impacting Jamaicans in the Diaspora.
As a continuation of the mandate of the Advisory Board, the board member with responsibility for the Southern United States Dahlia A. Walker-Huntington, Esq. formed several committees to assist her in the dual role of Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a facilitator of the Jamaican Community in the Southern United States. The Forum is being held to continue the dialogue began by the Consul General of Jamaica to the Southern United States, the Hon. C.P. Ricardo Allicock among Jamaicans in the region, and to introduce the committee chairs to the community.
All Jamaicans are invited to attend the Forum, and a special outreach is being made to leaders of Jamaican organizations to come and learn about the Advisory Board’s role, learn how they can join the various committees and share their expertise as the Jamaican Diaspora unites.
June 16, 2005 will be celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of the Jamaican Diaspora Conference, and plans for these celebrations will be presented at the April 14, 2005 meeting.
