INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS TO BE INCLUDED IN JAMAICA BIENNIAL—12/01/14
The Jamaica Biennial art exhibition scheduled to begin December 7, 2014, at the National Gallery of Jamaica, will include international artists as well as local artists. This is the first time non-Jamaicans have been included in the event. Executive director Dr. Verlee Poupeye believes this represents an “evolution” of Jamaican art. Most of the works are by Jamaicans or individuals in the Jamaican Diaspora, however.
NATIONAL GALLERY ANNOUNCES DAWN SCOTT MEMORIAL AWARD—12/02/14
Jamaica’s National Gallery announced the establishment of the Dawn Scott Memorial Award, which will be given to an artist who participates in the Jamaica Biennial 2014 exhibit scheduled for December 7, 2014 through March 15, 2015. The award is a private recognition award sponsored by Edward M. Gomez, a New York art critic and art historian, in honor of his friend Alison Dawn Scott, a Jamaican artist.
ANITA GETS ANOTHER CHANCE ON “THE VOIXE”—12/04/14
Anita Antoinette, the Jamaican born singer and contestant on “The Voice” television show, won a wildcard spot in the competition after being previously eliminated. Fans of Anita will get a chance to vote for her on December 8, 2014. This is the first time in the show’s history that all of the contestants in the Top 12 previously eliminated received invitations to return for the wildcard competition.
WEST KINGSTON JAMBOREE RETURNS—12/05/14
The West Kingston Jamboree is returning after an absence of four years. It will be staged in the playing field in Tivoli Gardens on Sunday, December 7, 2014. The show, which began in 1999, had been discontinued during the incidents of May 2010, when 73 civilians were killed during an operation conducted by members of the Jamaica Defense Force in the neighborhood. According to Oneil Coke, the director of Liv Up Records, the event’s sponsor, the community has experienced a lot of trauma and needs some stress relief. Entertainment events have not been held locally since 2010, but on Sunday, at 7 pm, the show will offer performances of by Beenie Man, Sizzla, I-Octane, Elephant Man, and others.
