NATIONAL DANCE THEATER HONORS FOUNDER WITH TORONTO PERFORMANCE—09/20/14
The National Dance Theater Company (NDTC) of Jamaica will honor its founder Rex Nettleford with a performance in Toronto, Canada, in the fall of 2014. The “Tribute to Rex: will be performed once as an ode to Nettleford, a Jamaican scholar, dance enthusiast, activist, professor and vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies. Nettleford founded the dance company in 1962. He died in 2010.

PRIEST IN BELIZE OPPOSES DANCEHALL EVENT—09/21/14
Bishop Dorrick Wright, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Belize, has opposed an event featuring Jamaican dancehall artiste Alkaline. He said he “strongly” opposed the event and believes it to be a “serious error in judgment” by the administration of Sacred Heart College, which is allowing it to occur on the campus. The concert is scheduled for the eve of the nation’s independence anniversary, but the Bishop says the concert represents a “departure from everything we in the Church hold as good, wholesome and sacred.”

DROOP LION AND THE GLADIATORS BACK FROM TOUR IN EUROPE—09/22/14
Droop Lion and the Gladiators have returned from a 25-date tour in Europe where they performed at many festivals throughout the summer. Back in Jamaica, the group is reflecting on its experiences and getting ready to do some intense work in the studio. Droop Lion remains relatively new as the lead singer of the legendary group, but he maintains his Rastafarian activities and acts as a musical ambassador, letting the music do his talking for him.

DANCEHALL GROUP EXPECTED TO BE “ENERGETIC” AT THE RACE FOR HOPE—09/25/14
Voicemail, a dancehall group, says its fans can look forward to an “energetic” performance at the seventh staging of the Race for Hope in Hope Gardens. The 5K run and walk event will occur on Sunday, September 28, 2014. The group is ready to get a “mad, energetic performance” intended to provide the runners with incentive to do their best. The event is sponsored by the Jamaica Institution of Engineers and the Nature Preservation Foundation, with funds going toward the preservation of the island’s green spaces and local wildlife.
