MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE WANTS INCREASED BANANA PRODUCTION—02/23/15
Derrick Kellier, Jamaican Minister of Labor and Social Security, said that the island’s banana industry is poised to increase production. According to Kellier, developments will include adding lands to banana cultivation to meet the demand of successful markets, such as that in the United Kingdom. Kellier traveled to the UK and held discussions with stakeholders with a goal to provide more ripe and green bananas to that nation.
LIME ISSUES APOLOGY TO USERS—02/24/15
LIME, the telecommunications company, said that it is taking action to resolve certain problems experienced by customers. A number of the firm’s mobile customers have had problems using their voice and data services. According to Elon Parkinson, LIME’s corporate communications manager, the problems have been resolves and many links are now restored.
GOVERNMENT PLANS TO INCREASE SPENDING ON COMMUNICATIONS—02/25/15
Jamaica’s government plans to enhance its communications initiatives during the new fiscal year. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) will receive an increase of 41 percent in what it receives for public relations programs. The Estimates of Expenditure for 2015-2016 provides the basis for government plans to spend $30.5 million within the Communication and Public Affairs Division.
JAMAICA’S SHIPPERS WORRED ABOUT PRIVATIZATION OF TERMINAL—02/26/15
The Shipping Association of Jamaica board of directors has expressed its worries about what it perceives as a lack of transparency in the way the government is trying to sell the Kingston Container Terminal. The group supports privatization, but is not in favor of a “fire sale.” Private investors in Jamaica should be treated the same as potential foreign investors, according to the association.
