JAMAICAN GOVERNMENT PARTNERS WITH SOUTH AFRICA ON NUTRACEUTICALS—11/24/14
The government of Jamaica is joining with the Republic of South Africa to enhance collaboration between the two nations in the nutraceutical industry. The Jamaica/South Africa Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation was signed in 2013 and provides for an exchange of scientists, researchers, technical scholars and experts, and for joint research and development programs.
GATES FOUNDATION GIVES J$226 MILLION TO ICT IN JAMAICA—11/26/14
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is providing US$2 million to fund a project designed to give Jamaicans better access to ICT services and training to promote national and personal development. The grant monies will also go toward a mandatory program of advocacy for decision-makers on the value of libraries in the nation’s development process.
COFFEE INDUSTRY BOARD TO CRACK DOWN ON FAKE BLUE MOUNTAIN PRODUCT—11/27/14
Jamaica’s Coffee Industry Board plans to crack down on sales of fake Blue Mountain coffee, especially in the resort areas of the island. The Brand Infringement and Enforcement Taskforce will begin monitoring and protecting the globally famous brand. It stated that raids concerning the infringement will occur “before Christmas” at local supermarkets, gift shops, and craft markets.
“HISTORIC” CARIBBEAN-WIDE BLACK FRIDAY EVENT TO LAUNCH—11/28/14
Six nations in the Caribbean plan to make history by participating in the biggest, multi-island Black Friday Sales Event on November 28, 2014. About 400 hotels and resorts will cooperate to host travelers to Barbados, Antigua, Trinidad, Tobago, St. Lucia, Anguilla and Nicaragua. Discounts will be offered on the official hotel association website for each island. They will be good for resort stays between January 5, 2015, and December 15, 2015. There will be no blackout dates. Travelers will be able to book reservations between the morning of Black Friday, November 28, 2014, and Cyber Monday, December 1, 2014.
