ST. MARY WATER PARK MAY BECOME MOST POPULAR THEME PARK ON THE ISLAND—11/29/14
Wata Land, a new water park in Lodge, St. Mary, is looking to become one of the most popular family-oriented theme parks in Jamaica. Located near Ocho Rios, the park has been in operation for three months. It offers an aqua park, water slides, and the biggest pool-lake in the Caribbean region. The park covers 20 acres.
MONTEGO BAY BECOMES FIRST “SMART CITY” IN JAMAICA—11/30/14
Montego Bay is working toward the goal of becoming Jamaica’s first “smart city.” It will be operating under the Emerging Sustainable Cities Initiative, which will be introduced in 2015. A two-year development program funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and has also received support from the Korean Government, will provide long-term sustainability for the city.
UTILITIES REGULATOR INVITES COMMENTS ON STANDARDS—12/01/14
OUR, Jamaica’s utilities regulator, is inviting comments from interested parties concerning proposed quality of service (QoS) standards for the telecommunications industry. Operators and users of the sector will be given time to comment until December 8, 2014. OUR intends to develop QoS measurement goals in several areas, including customer complaints, broadband availability rate, and complaint resolution rate.
GRANT SUPPORTS RED STRIPE PLAN FOR CASSAVA CULTIVATION—12/04/14
The cultivation of cassava, a project in which Red Stripe has decided to invest US$1.3 million for a processing plant, has been endorsed by Senator Norman Grant, the president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society. The new plant is meant to extract starch from cassava that will replace high-maltose corn syrup, which is currently imported and represents up to 40 percent of the ingredients used by Red Stripe in its drink recipes. The firm is creating a number of cassava farms across Jamaica to reduce production costs and improve its supply of the crop.
