Ten new automated kiosks were commissioned into service at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay Jamaica, to expedite the immigration process for passengers arriving to the island’s most popular tourism hub. The kiosks, which arrived in time for the December 15th official start of the winter tourist season, are a welcome addition to the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) and its drive towards faster clearance for passengers.
This news arrives on the heels of the commissioning of five kiosks at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston in late November. All 15 kiosks are expected to reduce processing time to less than 60 seconds for each passenger who interacts with the system.
“We are pleased that the kiosks have been installed at the start of our busy winter season,” said Paul Pennicook, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. “With the positive outlook on our winter numbers, these new tools will assist in faster processing of visitors to Jamaica and make the entire immigration process smoother.”
Jamaica is the first country in the Americas to allow passengers arriving from any international location to use kiosks for self-service immigration border clearance. The kiosks, supplied by air transport and government IT solutions provider SITA, will use sophisticated biometric checks to process passengers quickly and securely, increasing passenger processing by almost 60%.
Funding for the kiosks was provided by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) in collaboration with the PICA, the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment and the Ministry of National Security.
