JAMAICAN EXCELLS IN BROOKLYN
A Jamaican nurse living in the United States have become the first Caribbean person to hold the high position of Deputy Borough in New York City. She became a registered nurse after studying at the University Hospital of the West Indies and further qualified her self and two tertiary institutions in the United States. She founded Caribbean Women’s Health Association, a non-profit group initially staffed by volunteers and dedicated to improving health care for Caribbean immigrants….

TRADE UNIONS BOYCOTT MINISTRY OF LABOUR (12/02/03)
Trade Union groups are staging a boycott against the Ministry of Labour. In a statement yesterday, the JCTU said the Ministry was incapable of providing the necessary level of assistance to parties engaged in industrial disputes and has been referring disputes, to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT). The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions has also made mention of the manner in which the Ministry of Labour seem to be handling disputes in terms of their inability to provide guidance to employers and employees who appear before the Ministry to settle disputes…

JAMAICA EMPLOYEES FEDERATION SPEAKS OUT
The Jamaica Employees Federation has strongly voiced its opinion against the recent pay hike in Members of Parliament salaries. The Federation is concerned with the present groups in the government employ and who have outstanding wage and fringe benefits negotiations. The JEF is concerned with how the recent pay hike granted to the MPs is affecting the government’s inability to pay salaries over and above three percent for everyone else…

DAVIES CALLS FOR SOCIAL PARTNERSHIP (11/02/03)
The Finance Minister Dr. Omar Davies is calling for a social partnership between government and communities. The Minister said that the government has embarked on a number of initiatives to improve the economy and it was time for private sector to take advantage of these. The Minister pointed out what these incentives were and further stressed the need to reduce internal debt and this could be achieved by curbing public spending and unnecessary waste…

OPPOSITION MP CALLS FOR ANSWERS ON LAWYERS OFFICE RAID
The Opposition Member of Parliament for West Central St. James has called for an explanation into the incident involving two lawyers who had their offices raided by local policemen and Canadian mounted police. The lawyers are representing a client whom the Canadian government is building an extradition case against for drug charges. Minister Clive Mullings moved a resolution in the House last Tuesday in this regard, citing Attorney/Client privilege breach…

NEW ZEALAND ROCKS THE WINDIES BOAT
The West Indies got a wake up call after being beaten squarely by the Kiwis in the first round of the World Cup 2003. In a nail biting finish, the West Indies were able to beat the South Africans in their first match last week. The New Zealanders however, with excellent field display, and a consistent line of bowling were able to restrict the Windies for scoring a mere 244 runs to win…

JAMAICA FALLS 2-1 TO THE USA

The United States registered a 2-1 win over Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in front of a capacity crowd last night at the National Stadium. Supporters were disappointed at the lazy and sloppy play displayed by The Reggae Boyz, as they were outplayed and outfoxed by a young and inexperienced US team. The USA went ahead in the 11 minute with a header by defender, Carlos Bocanegra, from a Nicholas Garcia left-sided corner. Barely two minutes later striker, Christopher Klein, buried Jamaica further when he received a beautiful pass from midfield that beat the entire defence, and powered a right-footer past goalkeeper, Aaron Lawrence, to go 2-0 by half time. In the 51st minute Jamaica was awarded a controversial 35-yard free kick which Onandi Lowe blasted home. Technical director Carl Brown could not seem to put the right combination of players needed to penetrate the efficient USA team, and left many supporters wondering if he is the man for the job…

8 UK-BASED PLAYERS IN SQUAD FOR USA GAME

Eight UK-based players are among the 22 called for Wednesday’s friendly international against the United States at the newly resurfaced National Stadium. Included are midfielders, Micah Hyde of Watford; Ricardo Gardner and Jermaine Johnson of Bolton Wanderers and Damien Francis of Wimbledon, along with strikers, Kevin Lisbie of Charlton; Onandi Lowe of Rushden & Diamonds; Deon Burton of Portsmouth and Trevor Benjamin of Leicester City. All the UK-based players, with the exception Lowe, who is already in the island, are expected to join the rest of the squad on Sunday. The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) also noted that the squad will be reduced to 18 players after the final training session on Tuesday. Team USA, who will arrive in Jamaica on Monday, were beaten 1-0 by two-time World Cup champions, Argentina yesterday. The Reggae Boyz team will be selected from: Goalkeepers – Aaron Lawrence and Donovan Ricketts; Defenders – Tyrone Marshall, Linval Dixon, Ian Goodison, Claude Davis, Robert Scarlett, Craig Ziadie, Shane Crawford and Fabian Dawkins; Midfielders – Hyde, Gardner, Johnson, Andrew Williams, Theodore Whitmore, Omar Daley and Francis; Strikers – Lisbie, Lowe, Burton, Benjamin and Fabian Taylor.
