Joel Andem, of the notorious Andem gang, was held by policemen yesterday and charged with the murder of Sylvia Edwards, who was murdered by his gang at a gas station in July 2000. Andem was at the top of Jamaica’s most wanted lists. Andem, was charged for the murder of Mrs. Edwards whose husband was also murdered the day before he appeared in court as a witness to his wife’s murder. FINGER PRINTING PROCEDURE INTRODUCED BY US EMBASSY

The Embassy of the United States has introduced the finger printing procedure, bringing it in line with more than seventy other embassies and consulates across the world. The United States will implement digital finger printing procedure as of June 1, 2004. NEW IMMIGRATION CONTROL SYSTEM DELAYED- 26/05/04

The United States planned immigration control, which require all Jamaicans who are still holders of the ‘blue’ book, to change to the new machine-readable passport, fail to meet its implementation date. The US$2 million automated immigration and control system has caused a run on the Jamaican Passport Office with floods of people trying to renew and replace their old passports to new machine readable ones…

T & T POLICE INSPECTOR CALLS FOR FOREIGNERS TO PROBE POLICE

The president of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Social and Welfare Association, Inspector Christopher Holders is calling for foreigners to investigate policemen who have been accused of wrong doings. Holder is also calling for a mechanism to be put in place for policemen who are wrongly accused. Holder said: “There is a need to have a separate institution to do independent investigations, and it could even include citizens who are not from this country to conduct investigations.”…

BIDDING RIVALRY BETWEEN FOR ALPART OWNERSHIP- 25/05/04

Norway-based Norsk-Hydro and Swiss trader Glencore International has joined forces in order to gain control of Alpart before the May 26 deadline for change of ownership runs out. Both companies have teamed up against Russian Aluminium (RusAL), one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, from acquiring Kaiser’s stake in Alpart. Kaiser currently owns a 65 per cent share in Alpart, the alumina refinery and bauxite-mining venture based at Nain, St. Elizabeth. Hydro Aluminium owns the rest of the Alpart shares…
