Commissioner of police Francis Forbes was issued an injunction by the courts blocking him from overturning the inspectors within the Police Federation’s March election. Forbes argued that the elections were tainted and ordered them null and void after seeking advice from Attorney General A. J Nicholson. Forbes moved to void the election came from a complaint from an inspector that he was disfranchised…

US/JAMAICA RELATIONSHIP IMPORVING

The relationship between the United States and Jamaica has been strenuous in the last few months. This is due to the island housing Jean Bertrand Aristide, and the Jamaican businessmen who have built up hotel businesses in Cuba. With the departure of Aristide, relations between the two countries have improved, but the US is still concerned with CARICOM’s insistence on an investigation into the removal of Aristide from office and their intervention, as well as CARICOM’s failure to recognise the interim government put in place by the US… CUSTOM BROKERS DISGRUNTLED – 03/06/04

Recent policy change that prevents the release of containers from the wharfs before they are inspected has caused Brokers to be angry. The Brokers are disgruntled over the long appointments given of two to three weeks before their containers are cleared, irrespective of the amounts they have. SHOULD TEACHERS BE LICENSED?

Should teachers be licensed or not? This is the latest proposal made on Tuesday by Dr Dennis Minott, author of a recent study on CXC performance in high schools. Education Minister Maxine Henry-Wilson says she will not be drawn in any such discussion…

49-YEAR OLD PILOT ON DRUG CHARGE – 01/06/04

An American pilot was arrested on drug and ammunition charges after he failed to get off the ground at the Ken Jones Aerodrome. He was caught with 62 packets of compressed ganja, each weighing about 80 kilograms; a bag containing ecstasy, a magazine with six .45 cartridges, a flare gun with six cartridges, navigation kits, binoculars, an emergency kit and US$1,855 were found in the aircraft…

FATHER ABDUCTS CHILD FROM US

A father abducted his child from the United States without the knowledge of his mother. The mother, who filed a felony warrant for the father is a native Nigerian living in the United States. The child was reported to the authorities after a teacher noticed his picture on a website for Missing and Exploited children. The child was subsequently returned to his mother in Minnesota to his mother and his father turned himself in to the local police…

The United States have continued relentlessly to deport convicts who have served their time in the United States. OUSTED ARISTIDE STILL CLAIMS THE PRESIDENCY

Ousted President Jean Bertrand Aristide still claims that he is president of Haiti. He vows to return to his country after a short stay in South Africa where he is exiled. NARCOTICS POLICE ARREST BUSINESSMAN – 30/05/04

A businessman, his girlfriend and helper were arrested on narcotics charges after police allege that he is a major cocaine distributor. Paul Cargill, 30 is said to distribute the drug in the United States and England and was found to be in possession of 23 and a half pounds of cocaine during an early morning raid on his home…

DOUBLE MURDER CAUSES TWO BURNT BODY

A police sergeant reported that a double murder in Rema two weeks ago, might have accounted for the burning bodies of two persons found in Port Royal streets in Kingston. The sergeant sick to the stomach, asked a reporter nearby for a cigarette, while viewing the ugly sight of the charred burnt bodies. A police source said, “We hear that persons close to the man who was killed may have abducted the two men and shot them before dumping the bodies and burning them.”…

400M CHAMPION TO LEAD JAMAICAN TEAM IN ITALY

Davian Clarke, 400m champion will attempt to hold on to his position as Caribbean’s best as he goes up against Dominican Felix Shanchez. Clarke won the two last events when the two met at an invitational International in Kingston on May 7, when Clarke won that event and Sanchez was fourth. He hopes to keep the position at the Primo Nebiolo Memorial track & field meet in Turin, Italy…

Ireland 1-0 over Jamaica

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz last night lost against the Republic of Ireland 1-0 and ended the three-nation Unity Cup in last place. Graham Barrett got his first start for Ireland and beat Jamaica’s goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts in the 26th minute with a 25-yard shot. Jamaica’s coach Carl Brown said, “I’m pretty satisfied with the team and that they have achieved what they set out for in two very tough games. Reports from our members indicates that The Boyz played the better football and certainly looked to be the more interesting side but arguing, squabbling and passing the buck that was going on between players which hurt the team. The Boyz travel to Jamaica tonight and will return to camp before the team departs for Florida on Monday.
