CARIBBEAN COURT GOES AHEAD DESPITE OBJECTIONS – 02/07/04

WORK PERMITS COST RISE

The cost of working in Jamaica will increase effective August 1, 2004. Foreign nationals wishing to work in Jamaica will now have to find between J$10,000 and J$40,000 for a one month to a year stay respectively. Work permit fees were first introduced in 1973 and discontinued in 1978. A non-refundable fee of J$1,000 will be applicable to all persons applying for a permit…

A 56-year-old woman was shot and killed during a Sunday night service at the True Faith Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Papine, St. Andrew. DRUG WORLD THREATENS GOV’T MINISTERS – 29/06/04

Amidst the recent crackdown on drug lords in the island, government ministers and high profile members of society has been threatened. This was confirmed, as the police high command is moving to investigate intelligence that cabinet ministers and others have been threatened with death. The reports of death threats, as well as possible protest action, have emanated from police intelligence reports and come in the wake of the continuing crackdown on alleged drug kingpins.

MINISTER OF HEALTH SAYS HIV/AIDS STATS NO COVERED UP

The Minister of Health John Junior had denied allegations that the statistics of the island’s HIV/AIDS statistics is been covered up in a bid to protect the economy. The Health minister said that he did not understand why President Jagdeo of Guyana would say that Jamaica was covering up HIV/AIDS statistics, but he (Jagdeo) must be suffering from a common diseased suffered by politician ‘foot and mouth disease’. EDUCATION MINISTER CALLS ATTACK ON ILLETERACY

Education Minister Maxine Henry Wilson has called for society to work together to combat illiteracy of pupils leaving school and cannot read. She was addressing a group of people comprised of principals and board chairmen of Region six. She told them that children going to school from grade one and leaving without being able to read was deplorable. “There is no plausible explanation for illiteracy,” she noted…

HUE, HARVEY ON TARGET IN T&T’S PFL

Jamaicans Jermaine Hue and Chris Harvey and Guyanese Randy Jerome were among the scorers in the latest round of Trinidad and Tobago’s Professional Football League (PFL) matches this week. The prolific Jerome struck Starworld Strikers’ goal in a 1-1 draw against Defence Force in the mid-week schedule, while Hue and Harvey were on target for former champions W-Connection, as they shot past Tobago United 3-1. At the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, home team Tobago slumped to defeat against W-Connection, as Harvey and Hue, two of five Jamaicans on the W-Connection roster, netted in each half to give the two-time champions victory. Harvey opened the scoring in the 10th minute and Kendal Davis made it 2-0 on 25 minutes. Garth Woodley pulled a goal back for bottom-of-the-table Tobago 20 minutes into the second half, but Hue made the game safe with an 80th minute strike. Robert Scarlett, Oneil Thompson, and Lovell Palmer are the other Jamaicans signed up with W-Connection.
