YOU CANNOT REBUILD PORTLAND COTTAGE

Residents of the informal community in Clarendon called Portland Cottage, will not be able to rebuild their houses in that area. According to the Prime Minister, the community is a disaster area and every time it rains it is too baldly flooded out. The Minister of Housing and Environment was ordered to ensure that the Prime Minister’s orders were carried through and the government would be providing over 40 million dollars to Food for the Poor to construct housing for these people at an alternative site…

 

AND THE LAYOFF CONTINUES….

Ivan the terrible is still creating havoc long after his departure from Jamaica. The latest company to be lay offs over 200 persons is the Maroon Pride Banana Chips Factory, located in St. James. The factory will be closed temporarily because of heavy destruction within the banana industry. Expected closure of the factory estimated for over six months, as earlier in the year many of the banana crops had to be destroyed because the Moko disease now further affected by the hurricane Ivan…

HAITI GETS AID FROM MOTHER LAND

France has sent a cargo plane carrying tons of aid to the recently battered Haiti. Ivan followed by Jean hit Haiti causing devastation to the island. Haiti a French colony, is be assisted by France and many charities associated with the country…

NO BORROWING FOR REBULIDING SAYS DAVIES

Minister Omar Davies says that government property as well as private properties will not be rebuilt by state borrowing. He said whatever is in the national fund will have to do the job. Mr. Davies said that the country had to maintain and service all exiting loans and thus cannot borrow any more. Mr. Davies said that said that the government had gone out and borrowed peoples’ pension funds and therefore had to be in a position to repay…

 

TWO KILLED IN AUGUST TOWN JUSTICE GROUPS CALLS YARD FOR HELP

The human rights group, Jamaicans for Justice has made a formal request for the services of Scotland Yard, to investigate the shooting deaths of two residents in August Town. The request, said JFJ executive director Dr Carolyn Gomes, was made to the Peace Management Initiative (PMI) which will approach the Government. It is alleged that after patrol from the Jamaica Defence Force and the police, two men were found dead after gunshots were fired. Residents in protest said that the men were shot in cold blood…

HAITI GETS HELP FROM CARICOM

Haiti is receiving help from CARICOM in the form of food, water and medicine. CARICOM wants to move as quickly as possible to get an assessment of the extent of the damage to Haiti so that adequate assistance can be given. Items like rice, sugar, medicine and other food relief will be dispatched immediately say CARICOM secretary-General Edwin Carrington.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR C&W JAMAICA

C & W Jamaica has named their new female Jacqueline Holding, the former head of its Seychelles operation. The company said it wanted to regain its top position in the Jamaican telecommunications markets and once again take its place as consumer number one choice. C&W, which has for the past three years faced major competition in its cellular market in Jamaica, said the new chief executive would immediately continue the build out of leading-edge products and technologies in its efforts to improve overall customer service. LOOTERS CHARGED FOLLOWING IVAN

Several men allegedly caught looting during hurricane Ivan are to face the courts for their actions. The seven men were charged under the Public State of Emergency Act, the all pleaded not guilty. The police said they caught four of the seven men standing beside a wholesale in Downtown Kingston with over $30,000 worth of goods beside them. On arresting the four men, another was caught coming from the roof of the building where the others were picked up. The other two were caught with goods from Texaco gas station at the corner of Half Way Tree/Oxford Road and the other was caught with a refrigerator, his other accomplice manage to escape with appliances…

 

HISTORIC SITES DAMAGED BY IVAN

Some historic sites were destroyed by hurricane Ivan said the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and there are deep concerns about many of the structures. The Trust said that it was worried over the Manchester House and the Old Court House in Spanish Town. Reports from the Trust revealed that parts of the building across the island which are a treat to national safety will be demolished and construction done where possible…

 

COPS OF BREATON SEVEN TO BE TRIED NEXT YEAR

The five cops on murder charge for the murder of seven young boys in Breaton St. Catherine will face the courts on January 17th. The five policemen, Leighton Bucknor, Miguel Ebanks, Devon Bernard, Wayne Constantine, Winroy Edwards and Raymond Miller – had their bail extended when they appeared in court two weeks ago….

MAN WITHOUT HANDS EXCELS

A forty four year old man met a terrible accident on a construction site with left him with both hands have shown Jamaicans and the world that there is no success without determination. The man was injured at the age of 19 years old and was unable to find employment. Today, the Maroon Town man is a successful businessman operating a successful bag juice business. Winston Barr has not allowed his disability to stop his progress. His wife has been his assistant and they both are now branching off into bottling spring water, expanding their business…

CANADA MAKES THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO JAMAICA

The Canadian government has made their contribution to the Caribbean hurricane fund; saw Jamaica, Grenada and Cuba benefiting. The Canadian contribution was made through the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and CARE Canada. Canadian contribution to these Ivan victims is 1.7 million dollars…

WINDIES AND ENGLAND FINAL! – 25/09/04

England and the West Indies are to face off in the International Cricket Cup finals to be held at The Oval. The two teams, both having to personal scores to settle will go for the ICC Championship Trophy today. West Indies had a convincing win over Pakistan and England over St. Africa. The Brian Lara led West Indies is hungry for a win so some kind to take back to its falling fans and to restore pride to a wounded team…

 

KC SLAUGHTERED BY WOLMERS

As Manning Cup Championship continued, Wolmer’s Boys slaughtered Kingston College (KC) by 5-0. As the game got on the way, Wolmer’s took an early lead from Winston Boyd. Boyd went on to score in the 91st minute. KC won the cup in 1986 while Wolmer’s won in 1994. In other matches Meadowbrook secured their second victory over Denham Town while St. Jago dubbed Tarrant 5-0 in their opening match…

 

The CFU’s Gold Cup qualifying kicks off in October
Sept. 19
The regional qualifying of the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), begins next month with 24 teams placed into six groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Second Round, which will be comprised of six home-and-away series match-ups on December 12 and 19. Second Round winners will then advance to the Third Round of three home-and-away series games on January 9 and 16, 2005. The Third Round winners will advance to the CFU Final Round Qualification along with the hosts Barbados from February 20-24, 2005. The top three teams from the Final Round will advance to the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup in July. 2005
