IRRESPONSIBLE USE OF HIGHWAY2000 – October 22, 2004

The use of Highway 2000 is becoming a major concern to the operators to the major roadway. The concern is mounting because of the ever-increasing vehicular accidents on the highway because of improper use. It has been found that a significant number of accidents, which have occurred, is due to tyre failure and thus the Bureau of Standards and other organisations concerned will need to address the problem promptly…

 

AREA DON ZEKES UNDER HOUSE ARREST

Matthews Lane Don and area leader Donald Zekes Phipps has been granted bail in the sum of J$1.5M, and on condition that he surrenders his travel documents and report to the police station in Central three days per week. Zekes was arrested after a joint police/military operation found contraband in a grocery store owned by the Don. Up to the time his bail was granted, Zekes was unable to take up the offer because of problems with his travel documents. His lawyer, Churchill Neita Q.C confirmed that his client was in the process of conforming to the conditions of the bail…

AGRICULTURE MINISTER NEGOTIATES WITH EU

Minister of Agriculture Roger Clarke is attempting to complete talks with the European Union to reposition the date, which guaranteed sugar prices are to be slashed. He said he was confident that advances have been made in getting the EU countries to understand that a proposed 37 per cent cut in the price of sugar, over the next three years, could be devastating for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)…

CRIMINALS RESPONDS TO GOV’T CRIME PLAN – October 21, 2004

No sooner said than done’ as the old adage goes! No sooner than the government’s unveiling of its new crime plan ‘Operation Kingfish’­, crime bosses unleashed their wrath on the Spanish Town and Olympic Gardens’ communities. Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor caretakers, as well as three other people were killed at the hands of the gunmen. This has succeeded in raising the death toll in Jamaica to 1,165 since the start of the year…

 

CALLS TO CRIMINALISE WILFUL HIV/AIDS INFECTORS

Persons who wilfully infect other with HIV/AIDS are said to be premeditating murder. Dr. Marsha Barnett, reigning Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Festival Queen and moderator for the HIV/AIDS are making a call for the act to be criminalized. Dr. Barnett was speaking to delegates at the two-day West Indies Junior Chamber CARICOM Summit…

ASSESSMENT FIRST CHEQUES AFTER

The government is calling a halt to the issue of cheques to persons who have suffered damages to their property because of Hurricane Ivan until all assessments have been completed. Despite the call for a halt, the government had begun to issue cheques on Tuesday through the three distribution channels set up to reach the affected residents. The cheques for damaged homes which should have been distributed this week has been put on hold because several persons across the island have been reporting that the Ministry has not yet assessed the damage done to them by the hurricane….

UNDERGRADS AT UWI DE-REGISTERED – 20 October, 2004

The University of the West Indies has taken actions against over five hundred of its students who owe tuition fees. The institution has de-registered over five hundred and fifty students 229 from part-time and 323 from full-time studies were removed from the academic register. Deputy Principal Joseph Pereira told a group of journalist in a press briefing on the Mona Campus that there is a selected few who has been granted further special arrangement to pay by November 2004 the others will be granted leave of absence until fees can be paid…

 

NINTH COP KILLED SINCE 2004

The death of Inspector Vernal Hinds has pushed the death of police officers up to nine since the start of the year. The Inspector served 26 years on the force and killed at his home in Cedar Grove, St. Catherine. Reports are that Inspector Hinds tried to escape his attackers but was cornered and killed while trying to open his door…

HURRICANE VICTIMS RELOCATION STEPPED UP

Victims of Hurricane Ivan from the community of Roaring River is causing the government to be concerned that the practices of the community is putting them at risks of Typhoid. The government in light of this, has stepped up efforts to relocate the resident by purchasing land from The Sugar Industry Authority, through the Frome/Monymusk Land Company, have agreed to the sale of 20.49 hectares of land for the relocation of the residents…

 

NATIONAL HONOURS CONFERRED ON 146 PERSONS – October 19, 2004

National honours were conferred on 146 Jamaicans residents at the National Heroes Park on Tuesday. Herb McKinley was the most honoured for his years of distinguish service to athletics over the years by being awarded the Order of Merit (OM). Christopher Blackwell was awarded Order of Jamaica (OJ) for his contribution to the field of entertainment. Others were awarded Order of Distinction (OD) in areas such as construction, medicine, community development, social justice, religion and education. Medals of honour were presented to 48 members of the security forces and the fire service for meritorious service to their country…

OLYMPIC ATHLETES HONOURED BY JAMAICA

Olympic athletes who medalled were honoured as promised by the government. The sum of $3.39 million was paid to athletes in total who medalled at the recent Athens Olympics. Sprint sensation, 22-year-old Veronica Campbell, went home with a cheque valued at US$21,600 ($1.296 million) after winning one bronze and two gold medals. For winning the 200m she earned US$12,000 and US$6,000 for her bronze medal effort in the 100m. Campbell, along with four other athletes, shared the cash award for their 4x100m relay victory, with each taking home US$3,600.

Danny McFarlene took home US$8,000 ($480,000) for his silver in the 400 metres hurdle event, while other members of the 4x100m women’s relay team Tayna Lawrence, Beverly McDonald, Sherone Simpson and Aleen Bailey took home US$3,600 ($216,000).

WHO WILL LEAD THE JLP AFTER EDDIE – October 17, 2004

The race is on as to who will succeed Opposition Leader Edward Seaga for leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party. Senator Bruce Golding appears to be ahead of the game as MPs and Councillors back the chairman to succeed Seaga. Pernel Charles is the other contender for the top post but Bruce seem to be holding on to the lead according to the polls…

Jamaica Whips Haiti 4-0 in Under-20 World Cup Qualifier

Two goals each from Luton Shelton and Horace Howell powered Jamaica’s Under-20 team to a 4-0 win over Haiti in the Caribbean zone FIFA Under-20 World Cup qualifiers at Ferdie Neita Park yesterday. At press time the venue of the return game was still undecided. The Jamaica Football Federation stated that they were instructed by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), that due to political instability in Haiti, Jamaica should host the second game. Haiti’s delegation were reportedly instructed by their federation to return to Miami to prepare for the second leg and were reportedly booked to fly out of Kingston this morning. Jamaica is expected to qualify alongside host Honduras, Canada and Mexico in the CONCACAF under-20 final round series between January 26 and 30 in San Pedro Sula. El Salvador hold Boyz to 0-0 draw

Host Jamaica (1-1-3, 6 Points) were held to a scoreless draw at the National Stadium in Kingston last night in their crucial CONCACAF World Cup semifinal Zone A game against El Salvador. The result places the Reggae Boyz in second place on six points, five less than the United States, and one ahead of Panama. El Salvador are still at the bottom with four points but kept their hopes alive by sharing points with the Boyz. Jamaica were clearly the better side last night and constantly pressured El Salvador’s defenders but they just could not find the target when it mattered most. El Salvador, Jamaica and Panama are now in a battle for the second and and last Group A berth. The Semifinal Round concludes next month (17 November 2004) with Jamaica visiting the USA at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, while Panama hosts El Salvador at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Ciudad de Panama.
