JAMAICAN MED STUDENT WINS RHODES SCHOLARSHIP – 05/11/04

A Jamaican medical student in his final year at the University of the West Indies has won the Rhodes scholarship to the Oxford University. He plans to carry out a research to find out the rate of wound healing. He said, “I propose to do some research to find out exactly what are the rate limiting steps to try to speed up the healing because I think that it will have implications on hospital stay and the amount of resources used. RETIRED JUDGE DIES

Justice Madge Morgan, first woman to be first woman to serve on any Appellate Court of jurisdiction in the Caribbean, she has been a pioneer and role model within the Caribbean legal fraternity, and former member of the Integrity Commission. Justice Morgan a lawyer and public servant served on many commissions and have contributed extensively to the development of jurisprudence in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Justice Morgan was a member of the St. Andrew Parish Church and Jamaica has lost a champion for the cause of justice in the country…

JAMAICA SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH T & T

The Jamaican government has signed an agreement with Trinidad & Tobago to supply the island with natural gas. According to the Prime Minster in a special television broadcast, LNG on a “competitive, predictable” basis – a development that will give impetus to Jamaica’s plan for a major energy conversion project for its major industries and the establishment of a liquefied natural gas plant here. The Prime Minister also explained that talks were being conducted with T & T over a year ago and now that the breakthrough has been made, he is making it public to Jamaicans…

REFUGEES AT MONTPELIER GETS TRAINING – November 04, 2004

The Haitian refugee at the Montpelier camp in St. James will receive skills training courtesy of the Roman Catholic Church in that parish. The Heart Trust NTA’s Seafood Town Vocational Training will do the training. The training will be funded by the Catholic Church and will include :

· Basic English and communication skills;

· Block Laying

· Tiling

· Basic school education for children

JAMAICANS URGED TO SAVE ON ENERBY USE –

Jamaicans are being urged to save on the use of energy following the fire last week at Petrojam Refinery. The fire has caused an increase in the price of petroleum and petroleum products and is causing the country’s oil bill to run into millions of dollars. The explosion and the resulting fire did severe damage to the Power former Stabilizer tower, T-6 and lesser damage to the adjacent tower T-4, inclusive of pipelines and vessels.

 

LATIN AMERICAN SUMMIT DISCUSSES BUSH’S RE-ELECTION

The Latin American leaders have put the re-election of President George Bush at the top of their agenda at their two-day summit. The discussion is directed mainly at Haiti and what impact the re-election of Bush will have or will mean for the country. Before Bush’s previous election as president of the United States, Latin America was at the top of Bush’ agenda, but the events of September 11, had caused this to change. “I hope President Bush will start looking more closely toward the south,” Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo told reporters before opening the summit…

FINGERPRINT FOR ID NEXT GENERAL ELECTIONS – November 03, 2004

The Electoral Office of Jamaica has been given the green light to go ahead and use electronic fingerprint for ID verification in the next general and local elections. However, Derrick Smith of the Opposition Labour Party has said that there was one more step to go as the legislative amendments necessary to bring the electronic system into law were still being awaited. Jamaica’s next general elections is due in 2007…

JUDGE DENIED APPLICATION FOR CURFEW OF ZEKES

The police had made an application for the curfew of Donald Zekes’ Phipps, but Magistrate, Martin Gayle, denied the application. Zekes, notorious for his position of area Don for Matthews Lane was remanded in custody on a number of charges. The police is arguing that they want to restrict Zekes from visiting his homes in Matthews Lane. The police also said they are investigating the circumstances under which Mr. Zekes came in possession of $9million dollars when he was arrested. However, Mr. Phipps has given the police three days to return the money or face legal action…

PETROJAM FIRE COST COUNTRY MILLIONS IN OIL BILL

Minister of commerce, science and technology has reported that the damage caused to the government owned Petrojam Refinery has caused the country millions US$3 million or $180 million a month to import finished petroleum products, following last week’s $90 million fire Petrojam refines 70 per cent of imported crude petroleum products…

HURRICANE IVAN’S DAMAGE COST RISES – November 02, 2004

The cost of damages to the island by Hurricane Ivan has sharply increased. According to the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), the bill has risen to $35billion and not the $22 billion originally reported by the Prime Minister. Information Minister Burchell Whiteman told journalists during yesterday’s regular briefing following the weekly Cabinet meeting at Jamaica House that the actual damage and damage resulting in loss of income or earnings in the years ahead has put a different light on the situation…

GOVERNOR GENERAL GIVE THANKS

The governor general, Sir Howard Cooke has conveyed his thanks the South Florida community for its ongoing assistance in the country’s continued development, noting that the goodwill and love shown signified members’ care and concern for their homeland although their names have not been published. DPP DESCRIBED AS CHILDISH IN CONDUCT

The Director of Public Prosecution Ken Pantry has been described as childish in his conduct by attorney-at –law Sir Anthony Gifford, in the murder case of the wife of 37-year old Paul Gooden. Sir Gifford was in the process of cross-examining a policeman regarding some photographs only to have his questions being objected to by the DPP. Lord Gifford said he objected to Mr. Pantry’s objections and Mr. Pantry said, that Gifford should know that it was improper to put in the photographs without laying the foundation….

YOUTH REMANDED ON BUGGERY CHARGE – November 01, 2004

A 17-year old youth has been remanded in custody on buggery charges after he appeared in court. The youth was taken into custody after an 11-year old girl complained to her mother that he buggered her while he was at her home playing video games. The mother reported the incident to the police and was threatened by the boy’s brother, who is currently on the run. The youth pleased not guilty on appearance in court…

The Prime Minister has reported that Montego Bay’s sound infrastructure; worldwide recognition and international orientation has earned it the right to become an international business centre. The Prime Minister said he had reports from the Port Authority that agreement has been reached with cruise lines for the expansion of the port. Fuller crucial in Portsmouth’s win over United

Jamaican International Ricardo Fuller, played a crucial role in Portsmouth shock 2-0 win over Manchester United in the English Premiership on Saturday. The 24-year-old Fuller came off the bench to add his pace and skill to the Portsmouth’s attack and was instrumental in a penalty which gave his side a 1-0 lead over United. Fuller, who had replaced the injured Diomansy Kamara, was brought down in the penalty area by Rio Ferdinand after a a quick move inside the box. David Unsworth scored the resulting penalty. Fuller almost set up another goal for Portsmouth midway during the first half when he deftly dribbled by defender Gary Neville on the by-line and set up Lomana Lua Lua, but the striker’s low shot under pressure was cleared off the line by Neville. Fuller was signed from Preston North End to Portsmouth on a pay-as-you-play basis in late August.
