TREVOR BERBICK IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW
Trevor Berbick, former world heavyweight champion is presently at law. Berbick is alleged have a warrant out for his arrest on breaking and entering and larceny. Stolen household articles were found in his home in Ranch Hill Portland. The police said that they had gone to the boxer’s house because they got a report of a breaking and entering and has gone in search of the perpetrator. JUTC CONDUCTS RESTRUCTURING PROGRAMME (15/01/03)
The Jamaica Urban Transport Corporative is to make over 200 persons redundant. This retrenchment was recommended by some Swedish experts. The first phase of the retrenchment should see 300 loosing their jobs and in the second phase more jobs would be lost. LORD MAYOR OF NOTTINGHAM APPROVES VISA RESTRICTIONS (15/01/03)
Desmond Wilson, Mayor of Nottingham, has agreed that the UK should impose visa restrictions on Jamaica. He hopes it will cut down on the rigid interrogation carried out against Jamaicans who visit that country. The Lord Mayor is the first Jamaican to hold such a position and was appointed to his posts in May 2002. PRIVY COUNCIL TO REVIEW THE DEATH PENALTY (14/01/03)
The UK Privy Council is to review the death penalty which is mandatory for persons who are convicted of capital murder. During December of 2002, the Court of Appeal handed down a unanimous decision in the case of Watson, that the mandatory death sentence was not unconstitutional. The Court of Appeal also emphasised that it was the extremely violent murder cases over the last 12 years which necessitated the retention of the death sentence.

BARBADOS STOP JAMAICA 1-0

Barbados defeated the Reggae Boyz, 1-0 at the National Stadium in Barbados last night. Scoring for the winners in the 61st minute was Rivere Williams to give Barbados bragging rights over the Carl Brown led Jamaican team. It was an unattractive game with good goal tending by veteran Barbados goalkeeper, Horace Stoute, and missed opportunities by the Jamaican team of mainly local NPL players. Hazard striker, Roen Nelson, and substitute, Jonathan Williams, were presented with numerous opportunities but failed to hit the back of the net. Coach Carl Brown blamed his team’s defeat on their slow start. Former champions, Waterhouse, had a 1-0 upset win over Hazard United at Ferdie Neita Sports Complex yesterday. Demar Phillip gave Waterhouse maximum points with a goal in the 31st minute. In other games, an 82nd-minute goal from Nicholas McCreath, gave Harbour View a 3-2 win over Bull Bay, at Harbour View yesterday. Bull Bay took the lead with a Daviean Laing goal in the 24 minute, but Fabian Taylor equalized for H/View 10 minutes later. Sean Frazer put Harbour View ahead in the 49th with Bull Bay pulling level in the first minute of the second-half. Eight minutes from time, Harbour View sealed the game with McCreath’s strike giving the home team three valuable points. Village United overpowered Wadadah 6-1 at Elletson Wakeland Centre yesterday. A hat-trick from Teofore Bennett (35th, 55th, and 69th minutes), two goals from by Fabian Dawkins (6th and 19th), and a sensational header by Devron Clarke gave Village maximum points. JFF STEPS INTO RENO CONTROVERSY (15/01/03)
The controversy which began brewing at Reno Football Club and Western Strikers Football Company (WSFC) which managed the Club’s affair up until Monday could be seeking legal action to recoup some of its money.
