The highly anticipated Jamaica Poetry Festival shall have it’s 4th annual staging on Sunday August 10th at Louise Bennett Garden Theatre, 36 hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica.
Social Intervention: The Jamaica Poetry Festival is a continued and sustained effort aimed at social intervention, renewal and transformation. This is a collaboration which includes the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), Edutainment Promotion and the Jamaica Poetry Foundation. Consistent with our social mandate, we have a youth focus which hopes to help in resetting of the mindset of the Jamaican youth.
Art and Life
Creative expressions are effective means of therapy and have proven to help in treating mental scars and delinquent behaviour, since most deviant behaviour have roots in a lack of creative self expression. Therefore, in balancing art and life we aim to celebrate and promote positive, creative and socially responsible self expressions, in the interest of the social fabric of Jamaica.
Free Creative Writing Workshops: The Creative Writing Workshops will be facilitated by Yasus Afari, Steppa and the JCDC among others. The workshop component will commence at 10am and will finish at 2pm.
Our Creative Writing Workshops will focus on the notions of caring and sharing with the view of transforming lives and shaping the future with positivity in art and in life.
The Jamaica Poetry Festival Showcase which begins at 7pm shall feature several national and international poets and a very special guest artiste.
Cultural Tribute: As is our tradition, this year we are paying tribute to several Literary Icons. Our 2014 tribute will feature: Mutabaruka, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Jean Binta Breeze, Oku Onuora, Benjamin Zephaniah, Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka and Una Marson.
We thanks our kind sponsors for their vision and support: JIIC Your Insurance Place From GRACE KENNEDY and JCDC and we hope to have several others with whom we are currently engaged.
