Federick Dacres attained a discus throw of 66.30 meters at the Big Shot meet at Excelsior High School. The throw, which exceeded qualification standards for the IAAF World Championships, was especially gratifying given that Dacres experienced knee surgery that threatened his career in 2014. He said that he is hoping to compete in the 2016 Olympics.
ATKINSON COMMITTED TO BREAKING STEREOTYPES—01/28/15
Jamaican swimming champion Alia Atkinson wants to break the stereotypes surrounding black people and swimming. She is determined to prove that black athletes can swim just as fast as white athletes. Atkinson, 26, said there is a myth that the physical build of black people held them back from being world-class swimmers. She says that she has proved this thinking is false and that success depends on how efficient the swimmer is in the water, given whatever physique he or she has.
MILLER ENCOURAGED BY YOUNG PLAYERS—01/29/15
Jamaica’s captain in the Nagico Super50 cricket competition in Trinidad and Tobago Nikita Miller said he was heartened by how the relatively young team had performed at the tournament. Jamaica was eliminated at the semi-final stage by Guyana. He noted that the batting of the team needs more improvement, but that progress has been made since the previous season.
“CRICKETING SOLUTION” PROPOSED BY CRICKET BOARD—01/30/15
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) believes there should be a “cricketing solution” to the problem involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The WICB is calling for a meeting with the Indian board in the near future, hoping to avoid a US$42 million payout the BCCI demands.
